One of the guys I work with has offered me an older Model 36, square-butt, with nickel finish. Comes with original box ( Hmm- silver, not blue ) and papers. If I was forced to put a number on the condition - it would be 97% ++. I want to offer him a fair price, but I also don't want to overpay. I'm thinking $400. Opinions ?

Photos. An older pinned barrel, flat latch, diamond stock version in that condition will bring more money than one that does not have those features. I have no idea when the nickel guns started being shipped in the silver boxes, but I did get a few in the 1970's that came that way. Pinned barrel was dropped in the early eighties, flat latch and diamonds were gone by 1968.

Not seeing, or being able to examine the gun, $400 sounds OK. See what ammo, grips or holsters he's going to throw in on the deal. Remember, he has to include them, you don't pay extra for them.

Not being able to evaluate this revolver without photos, I'd say somewhere between $400-600.

I don't like square butt 36's, but lots of folks do.

I'm also not keen on M36 : I like the M38, 49, 40'and 42 much more.

However, the nickel finish adds value, even with my taste.

Model 36 info

Well gentlemen, your comments encouraged me to buy the M-36. Turns out the seller has owned it since new (circa-'71). Though one side of the box indicates "blued", the actual label with the SN "134JXX", has a "N" indicating finish. I'm very pleased, and thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Congratulations on your purchase! Sometimes it is hard to make decisions. I don't have it yet, but I bought my first J yesterday. Now all I have to do is wait for it to come. I have wanted 1 for awhile, we'll se if it was worth the wait Bob
