Did anyone else get an email from Brownells informing Varget was available? I clicked and was a little taken back.

It's listed at $53.99 with an ad for "financing available." This is, of course, before the hazmat and taxes get tacked on.

Understanding Varget is remarkably versatile and has been in short supply it, nonetheless, seems a bit much.

I picked up 4 one lb jugs from the Hodgden website last week. It was $45 a jug plus tax. Hazmat shipping was $20. Hodgden posted on their FB page that there was a unicorn on their website, so I guess it was the Varget.

My local store sent a text two days later that they had recieved an order. $45 a jug as well. I was there a couple weeks ago and he had a good bit of H4350 and 4064. Also a good supply of pistol powder. I say local store, it is an hour drive each way so the $20 hazmat fee is about the same as half a day off and travel time.

But on a good note, he said he is seeing a more consistant stream of powder. Nothing on primers, but at least the powder is becoming more available.

I used to purchase a good amount from Brownell's. They've never been very competitive with pricing, but over the past few years they jumped the shark on pricing.

These days I rarely bother with opening their email specials. If I'm buying parts or supplies from them now it's because they're the only with what I need.

In fairness though, Varget is high everywhere. IMR 4350 and other long time favorites being over $300 for 8lbs, it ain't just Varget we're getting hosed on.

Varget is a fine powder for many purposes and I've used a good bit of it. I suspect many began using it based on it's performance reputation then stuck with it without trying similar powders.

I've found the much older H4895 to be at least slightly more versatile than Varget and it will generally (not always) provide slightly better accuracy than Varget with about the same velocities.

I haven't bought either powder since before the shortages, so I don't know if one is any easier to find than the other. Regardless, if Varget is all that's available, it's hard to go wrong with it.

Varget was my go to powder for .223 and 22-250. One of the most accurate powders I have ever used. I've gotten out of most hunting and rifle shoting and have 3 lbs on my shelf, but it will stay there until I'm sure I'll never need it. Once my 1,000 rounds of .223 and .222 are gone I'll probably be in a nursing home.

When one company controls so much of a product you need not expect to see lower prices. I knew the lack of competition would be too great an opportunity for Hodgdon not to take advantage of.

Admittedly, they have surpassed my expectation. $62.99/LB $409.99/8LBS Wow!

I agree, Hodgdon does control a majority of the powders on the market.

The own their line of course plus Winchester powders and the iconic brand IMR. Then they acquired Western Powders which are both Accurate Arms and Ramshot Powders too. (that's something like over 100 smokeless powders)

That only leaves Alliant Powders plus a few others available here in the USA like VV, Shooters World, Norma and Nobel Powders. (I'm sure I missed some)

At lease Alliant has a very wide variety of powders available but not where I live. (38 smokeless powders from last count)
