I have a Ruger 270 MarkII, using 130gr Win factory ammo. I want a load that shoots same as factory, flat & accurate. I have Varget powder, but if there is a better powder I will use it. For ground hogs 110 or 130 gr. Any suggestions? Thanks 629man

Good morning
First is your expected range . I shoot tunnel pigs at less than 50 yards with a Marlin Ballard 38-50. If you are going to be sniping out at 250 yards accuracy is the issue. Any .27 caliber bullet moving at 2000 + fps is going to SMASH a groundhog.
For groundhogs you do not need more than 110 grain bullets but whichever is least expensive and meets the accuracy issue for your rifle.
If you go to the VIT: web sight they have all the info you need to get reloading.

I've tried the lighter slugs for chucks in a .25-06 many years back. Unless you have some timber nearby, or are shooting into a hill...I'd be a bit concerned shooting even a 110 gr slug. The beauty of the hot .224's and even 6mm's are the light bullets at such a velocity that they literally disintegrate when the hit ANYTHING.

I'd be concerned about whats beyond the target with a .270 win.

Unless your in appropriate country...then disregard.

The internet ate my reply yesterday, I'll try again.

I've had excellent results using 56.2gr of H4831 behind a Hornady 130gr Interlock SP in my Remington 710. The book lists this at about 2800fps, and every deer I've taken with it has been on the ground within a few yards. It's a consistent 1.5MOA load from the bench, and I could probably tweak it in another half-minute if I really wanted to, but I don't use it as a bench gun. Relatively mild recoil and accurate, tough to beat. (Factory Remington 130gr CoreLokts will usually shoot 1.5-2MOA from the same gun.) Mild flattening of primers, but no cratering or piercing; may just be soft primers (magtech large rifle).

It is worth noting that H4831 (or H4831SC, the same powder with shorter grains) is NOT the same as IMR4831. The above load using the IMR powder would be WELL above published max, so double-check what you're using. :)

Don't know about your particular rifle, but I've never gotten light bullets to shoot well in .270. Then there is the issue of different POI for different weights.
I finally settled on 130gr Rem core-loct for everything except 130 Partition for the tough stuff.
IMR 4064 for moderate loads, 4831 to go faster.

If the recoil for varmits is too much, a 22-250 will fix that.

My .270 Win rifle LOVES this load...

Winchester cases
CCI BR2 primers
Hornady 130-gr Interlock
57.4 grains Hodgdon H4831SC
Find how short to trim your cases so that the Hornady Bullet is seated to the cannelure and is just off the lands

My experience with Varget is that it is a great powder for many things, but it sucks with 130-gr .270s..... Too fast.
