My mom just called me and said Vera passed away at 103.

My mom and her generation loved Vera. Mom said the Brits called her "our Statue of Liberty" because she was always on the radio and in the movie reels committing so much support, time and energy entertaining the Allied troops.

Mom is sad at her passing but proud of the legacy she left.

My dad was a WWII vet. The older I get, the more I appreciate the sacrifices both my parents and the people in their generation made for us. In many cases before we even existed. There are lots of individuals that have done great things since WWII, but I can't think of an entire generation that pulled together for the sake of freedom like theirs did.

If they were still alive, I think they'd be disappointed where the country is at today.

I remember her songs from my times in the UK. She was in her 60s then and very popular. What a voice. RIP my good Lady.

The songs of that era certainly reflected the hope and uncertainty of those times, didn't they?

I think of songs like "We'll Meet Again"..."Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree"...and "When the Lights Come On Again"...and I realize just how desperate and serious things were back then. Young men went off to war...and the odds were high that their loved ones truly would never see them again.
