I wanted to do a little more research and examination on this subject so that I can introduce a thoughtful discussion about it.

When someone pulls a gun on me or is about to bash my head with a tire iron, I can usually head it off with a good knock knock joke...:)

Old news. The "Verbal Judo" instructional program has been around for something like 30 years and those de-escalation techniques have been taught to literally generations of cops. Yes, it works, but it's not appropriate for all encounters. Also, it's a fact that American cops often talk or keep talking when they should be responding physically, putting themselves at greater risk than they are legally or morally obligated to.

As far as non-cops go - I'd never recommend spending your time trying to talk your way through a violent confrontation unless you have no other option. Again, the longer you wait to respond the greater the risk.

We teach it to our new officers and refresh our older ones, it has it's place but it is no the end all.
