Anyone try it yet?

It's a downloadable app for smartphone to help you block spam or identify spam and robo calls before picking up.

Call Filter Plus ($2.99/mo.) gives more options such as identifying unavailable/anonymous numbers.

Seems like another "feel good" effort to make the consumer think something is finally being done about those annoying calls. We all know the number that shows on our phone is not where the call originated.

The main options are to block the number. My phone only allows 100 numbers to be blocked. You can send all suspicious numbers directly to voicemail. Who wants to waste time screening and deleting numerous messages? You can report the number as spam and it will show it as such if it's used again. Chances are that you will be reporting numbers of innocent people as spam that could affect them down the road.

I thought about trying it but the more I thought about it the more I thought it was nothing more than "snake oil" from my provider. It's easier to just ignore all calls that I don't recognize and leave it at that.

Your thoughts?

I can guarantee you will be reporting the numbers of innocent people. I had one day I received 6 calls from somebody trying to lure me in using MY OWN PHONE NUMBER. Caller ID said it was me calling. I've been talking to myself for years and I didn't need a telephone to do it.

Verizon is trying to make an extra buck off of the disgruntled customers who should not be getting all this spam and robo calls anyway. This was not a problem until government stepped in and deregulated Ma Bell. It has been a downhill slide ever since, spam, and terrible quality. Half of the phone calls I get I cannot understand the caller because of distortion and poor transmission levels. I am a retired AT&T manager and what people accept today for telephone service is about as good as two tin cans and a string.

My iPhone 8 has a feature to send all calls not in my contact list straight to voice mail. I use it.

I don't bother blocking them as they make up a new one every few minutes. I don't see how they can get away with spoofing other numbers like that.

That’s sorta what I do. I NEVER answer my phone if the caller is not in my directory. If they leave a voice mail, I decide whether to call back. I get 5-10 calls a day that I do not answer.
It’s not that complicated.

Well, it’s not that complicated if, like I have to, you have to answer every call that comes your way. It’s really very quickly apparent if the call is a robocall or actually for me. I don’t get too wound around the axel about stuff like this. After all, I’m pretty sure the robocaller don’t know me . . .

This is not limited to iPhone 8. Any IPhone can do this.

However, if your life style does not allow you to limit yourself to calls from people your know, i.e. you have a business, this is not an option.

Carriers should be stopping these spoofed numbers!

My phone screens calls, marks them as spam and blocks them for free

Changed from Verizon to T Mobile couple years ago. Started spending more time in New Mexico and Verizon had no coverage at all in the area. Kept my old i phone 6 and it does a great job announcing spam calls. So far so good.

What I hate is to get a call and the calling id says it is coming from me on the same line that is ringing. I actually think that they should pass a law that any caller ID must be correct. Off my soap box, Thanks

According to an article by Andy Meek on the website BGR on August 27, 2019 (I can't remember whether links are allowed here these days, so don't want to offend and have just given plenty of specific info that will let you search if you care to read it), Verizon customers were auto-enrolled this past Tuesday in the company's free Call Filter service to block spam calls.

The premium version of the service, Call Filter Plus, costs $2.99 per month and comes with extra features like showing the caller name and the ability to create lists of spam callers. As far as the free version of the service goes, however, this is what Verizon says you can expect:
  • If you get a call from a number that’s been reported as spam, that call will be blocked and sent to voicemail.
  • You might also see calls labeled as “Potential Spam,” in comparison to the certainty of the first kind of spam calls we just mentioned above. In this case, instead of a name showing up on the screen, you’ll see the words “Potential Spam” and the option to turn on blocking for such calls.

If I don’t recognize the number it goes to VM. No message? It gets blocked.

I don't know about other cellphone providers but Verizon customers can send other Verizon customers a voice mail without actually calling the person. There isn't any number to block.
