I was reading an interesting articleon what happened in the Civi War on this date, and though not partof the article--was part of a comment made. I never knew that Patton and Puller--were 1st Cousins! Anyone know more on that????

Yep. If you look at both of their personalities, capabilities, and so forth, you'll find that both men had far more in common than one might believe.
Both were hard nosed, stubborn, arrogant leaders whose men would (and quite often did) follow them through the gates of Hades.
I don't know if they ever met. I've never seen that they did. But I would've loved to have been a fly on the wall at a their meeting. I don't think they would have gotten along...they were the same man in different forms.
Both revered in their perspective branches of service.

Too bad General Patton died in that "crash". Can you picture General Butler and General Patton waging war against North Korea and the Chicoms! Things sure would of turned out real BAD for China.

I have read much on both these great officers and from what I have seen they never met.

Thank you all for the info. im going to have to do some actual research on this one. Another thing they have in common with me--are they are my two most favorite officers and glad we had their talents on our side.

My cousin was a 34 year Active Marine. He was an E9(MGS)and had been there done it. He told me a lot about Chesty, of course I have also read a bit.

My next door neighbor went from the beaches of Normandy into Germany and served under Patton for a while. He had lots of good to say about him. I can remember well that he told me about Patton’s rather interesting voice back in the early 70s. That was the first time I ever heard about it and it was decades later till I heard/saw it mentioned again.

A few years ago--a friend of mine found the audio of Pattons real speech--the Grease the treads of our tanks-shoveling sheepdip in Louisiana--speech) and his voice was kind of nasily and high-pitched. However, id never say that to his face or behind his back. :-))

Know a guy from Columbus, GA. He was a teen just prior to the war.
He said George Patton was do given to profanity that the local radio stations gave up on allowing him to talk on the radio.
The Columbus guy got drafted , went from Company clerk to First Sergeant. But that's another thread!

Both attended the Virginia Military Institute for a year. Patton went on to West Point, Chesty enlisted in the Marines. Both had grandfathers who were Virginia officers that were killed during the War of Northern Aggression. Both grew up hearing war stories from former Confederates.

Both were aggressive leaders that could inspire love and hate from their men.

I heard old Chesty lived in the San Diego area. And if a Marine knocked on his door, Mrs Puller would invite them in and the General would talk to the young Marines for hours. Probably hoist a few beers too.

When Chesty was retired, he moved back home to West Point, Virginia. Marines of all ages used to go by his house on US 17 and all were welcome.

Chesty did know George Marshall. Marshall was the commander of the Army War College in the '30s when Chesty attended.
