I was in the local Gander Mountain today, and saw again a S&W nickel finish revolver. This gun has a barrel that is "about" 3" long. The frame seems to be a K frame. The grips are horn or horn imitation. The gun has only a serial number in the crane area. The serial number on the butt of the frame starts with a "v" and is about 5 digits long. The front of the barrel is flush, doesn't appear to be crowned. Nothing on this gun indicates a model 10. I am curious as to what this gun is- maybe a victory m&p that has been cut down and nickeled? No lanyard ring on the butt, btw. Also, GM is asking $415.00 for this gun...thoughts?

I'd say that price is at least two hundred dollars too high for a chopped down and nickeled Victory model with imitation stag grips. The only thing that could make it worse is if its been "converted" from .38 S&W to .38 Special.

I think I'd steer clear.

I saw one just like it at the show in Gonzales, La. last weekend. It was definately a cutdown Victory. I didn't check the serial number to see if it had been converted because after I saw what had been done to it I was no longer interested. It was also there two years ago when I was over there. I think the price was less than $300. There was an outfit in England that converted many of the lend-lease .38 s&w cals. to .38 special after WWII and sold them over here. I was told that Lee Harvey Oswald shot the officer in Dallas with one of these but I don't know if it is true.

Hi Charlie,

I always love reading your interesting stories!!!

Ruby shot Oswald with one of them funny wheel guns that has a cylinder that turns the wrong direction, and holds six rounds instead of five . . . the trusty old Colt Detective Special.

Ruby aimed for the gut because he said that he wanted to make Oswald suffer as much as possible before he died.

T.

PS: Sorry . . . don't know the type .38 spl. bullet Ruby used . . . but it would definately have to be called a "One Shot Stop!"

Hello ,Sierra Kilo . What ever happened to the Highway Patrolman you were going to post pictures of?

B.t.w. any modified Victory or M&P is a $100. shooter if mechanically sound.

Chrome belongs on bumpers , hammer and trigger should be case color hardened.

Cut barrels belong on 'Jovino" specials.

Regards ,,AL

Gosh boys........You make me feel like I should take my Cogswell and Harrison re built 38 special, reparkerized, barrel cut down to 3 1/2 inches, different cylinder installed to make it 38 special, no original grips and throw it away.

The problem is, I paid $200 for it, and it is my favorite carry and shooting gun. Oh, I forgot, they also installed a target front sight. It protects me today just as it did for some soldier in a far away land during WW2. I wish it could talk to those pristine QUEEN guns you boys hide in your gun safes........NUFF SAID

Tom-

That's true, but isn't what he asked. Ruby used a shrouded Cobra, by the way, not a Det. Spcl.

OSWALD did shoot shoot OFFICER J.D. TIPPETT with a cut-down Victory Model.

Boy, great memory...The HP is resting comfortably at the house alongside it's 6" barrel brother which is undergoing a bit of surgery to repair/replace the rear sight leaf screw...I am having camera difficulties; I tried to post pictures and wasn't successful. I will try again-

Thanks!

Oswald Special, cut down or re-barreled(from 5") re-chambered(from 38-200) to 38 Special, mismatch of parts, loose as a goose, splits some cases......but shoots actaully pretty decent, paid less than a $100
