Just read an article in the Washington Post that reciprocity will not be recognized in 25 states.

"The move also means Virginians with a history of stalking, drug dealing or inpatient mental-health treatment cannot obtain a permit in a state with comparatively lax laws and carry a handgun legally at home."

Virginia is doing away with recognition of states that don't meet the "new standard" as of 2/1/16. What it doesn't address is if those states will no longer recognize Virginia.

I'm positive that a Virginia resident can't get a NC CCW permit. I'm also pretty sure a NC resident can't get a CCW if they fit any of the criteria listed in the article for denying a NC CCW reciprocity.
Hmmmm

VA still offers non resident licenses, and those are relatively easy to obtain, all done though the mail.

The article says they continue to honor Utah, I wonder if Utah non resident licenses are ok.

AFAIK NC has no non resident license, but they recognize a large swath of other states.............for now.

This could be all about money. How many more people will now spend the money to obtain the non resident that had no reason to do so before. Sounds like a real financial cash cow. I rarely travel through Virginia but if I was planing to go there for a vacation, etc I will now just stay out of it all together.

The way the reciprocal agreement was explained to us, way back when we signed on to it, was that for it to be honored, it had to be mutually accepted in both states. If either state opted out, then the agreement was null and void. They may not have formally stated that our permits aren't accepted at this time, but once this goes into effect February 1st, our permits shouldn't be valid in the balance of the states.

Looks like Utah is still honored -- and I have a non-resident license there.

But it probably doesn't matter because I get to Virginia about once every two decades.

Well, I like to drive my convertible on the Blue Ridge Parkway (BRP), and I can get on it from NC as well as VA at about the same distance.

So if I get on in NC and drive north, I'm guessing my NC CC is okay, since the BRP is a federal park.

My son just called me a few minutes ago and ask me to check this on the internet. He had a fishing trip planned to Virginia but says he won't go if this is true.

unfortunately this could just be the tip of the iceberg slamming into the right to carry concealed weapons in our country....I am done buying anymore firearms until the dust settles after the next presidential election...if we have many more mass shootings that the media goes crazy with it is only going to get worse I'm afraid....we tend to watch DC too close and not our local government....they can take away just as fast as the feds

Be very careful with this one, carry in National Parks is generally subject to applicable federal, state, and local firearms laws.

Check the Virginia web page, it is my understanding you can carry in your car if it is in a closed container such as a glove box. I AM NOT AN ATTORNEY AND AM NOT GIVING YOU LEGAL ADVICE. PLEASE VERIFY THIS INFORMATION WITH VIRGINIA.

Virginia doesn't address the issue of other states recognizing a Virginia permit for the simple reason that Virginia doesn't have any say so in that. It isn't their decision to make.

I received an email from the NRA on the subject and it has some contact numbers and emails for us to voice our opinion (more like disgust) on the issue. We need to let our voices be heard.
