My wife surprised me a few months ago with a stripped AR-15 Lower from Palmetto State Armory. A "Virginia" logo, with Lady Liberty trampling upon a tyrant, and Virginia's motto "Sic Semper Tyrannus" (Thus Always to Tyrants). Came out this year during Virginia's battle with a certain elected leader who hates guns and other scary things. $10 from the sale of each lower went to Virginia Citizen Defense League, the folks who do all the heavy lifting for gun rights in Virginia.....
I pondered about how this rifle would look once assembled. I went with a "Utility Rifle" concept, a knock about gun at home in a scabbard on an ATV, light weight for ease of carry, no optics to get banged up or fog. I had a 16" A1 Carbine upper left from a previous gun trade, so just needed trigger parts and a stock to have a complete rifle. A G.I. style collapsible stock from Midway ($70) and Palmetto State Armory trigger parts chosen and installed by my gunsmith ($105) and the rifle was complete. Picked it up today and ran about 100 rounds through it, I'm very pleased.
Shot it at 100 yards to check zero, she was dead on. For giggles I shot some 200 yard steel from the prone position, easy hits. I actually shot a fairly nice five shot group on a new piece of steel I just got from Rural King.
About 4" group, prone with no sling support, that will do....
13" rifle steel shot from 200 yards, prone:
Close up of the "Virginia" graphic on the lower, "Safe" and "Fire" are replaced with "Sic Semper". The Tyrannus marking where full auto would be is for wishes only. The Tyrant whose neck is being trod upon by Lady Liberty is said to resemble our esteemed Governor...
The group on the right shoulder of this steel is a five shot group fired from 200 yards, prone, no sling support. The fifth round just grazed the edge of the steel. Probably 4" or so, or 2 MOA. The three larger bullet strikes on the left side of the target are from my Springfield M1A (.308).....
The upper came off a 1980's vintage Olympic carbine, the trigger is a set recommended by my gunsmith, a step above a Milspec trigger, one with which he has had good results. I like it so far.
Rifle weighs 6.7 pounds un-loaded.
