Troll, besides being a mythological Scandinavian being, is a Norwegian Antarctic research station. On Friday, an Icelandair Boeing 767-300 landed there, on a snow covered blue-ice glacier runway.

I don't care what they say, that takes balls of steel to land that commercial jetliner on a runway that is basically ice. I read about this yesterday, 7 pilots, 1 flight engineer, 20 cabin crew and a 20,000 mile round trip - 7,000 alone from South Africa. Crazy.

I don't care what they say.....
Not knowing anything about piloting, that seemed dicey for a commercial jet. Then I saw video from a 757 crew that landed there a few years ago, and they all said it was the pinnacle of their long careers.

Ultima Thule: Troll station, Antarctica: obviously, Norwegian

Basically on the opposite side of the continent from McMurdo. Norwegians have the right to a Station due to Ammondson first to the pole. Others are England, US, New Zealand, Soviet Union, Chile and Argentina. New Zealand claims islands in the area, Chile and Argentina claim their boundary's extend to the pole. US, Russia and England all claim first to see the continent as each had sailing ships there in the spring of the same year. I think there are 12 total nations having bases of which the other 5 have treaties to do so.

I am assuming that Icelandair has a contract to supply the Norwegians. They certainly know about flying long distances over and onto cold climates.

Having been an Air Force 'troll (air traffic controller) for 25 years, I sincerely appreciate the video, bigwheel....

When I was on a temporary duty assignment with the Norwegian Air Force I had to have an example of the country's mascot. He sits on my mantle for good luck.

They are irresistible. This one was guarding the door at a Norwegian gas station.
