Volquartsen Extractor What???

I have my first 15-22 on the way and thought I’d pre-purchase a few minor upgrades while I wait, one of which is the highly-regarded replacement extractor from Volquartsen. $10 seemed reasonable. Little did I know, until the package arrived today, that it’s a thin sliver of steel barely larger than a nail clipping. Based on size/price ratio I would expect the thing to be made out of 24k gold. I gotta get into the firearm accessory biz...

Buy a half dozen factory mags and a McFadden speed loader and let it rip!! Shoot a brick through it before considering upgrades. These rifles are made to shoot right out of the box. You'll have a blast!!

I had quite afew FTE with my MP 15/22 when new. Put the Vol. ex. in and don't know if I've had one since. Well worth $10. And the McFadden loader is a must. Worth every penny. I bought the adapters for a couple of my pistols, so mine gets a lot of use.

The extractor is worth every penny and combined with the CMC trigger I fitted it's like a different rifle.

I had ejection problems prior to S&W tweaking the ejector, but no extraction problems, so I'll forego that until something changes. Maybe I won't, because it's fun to fiddle with these things.

So S&W tweaked their design in later models and I might not need the Volquartsen at all?

Just put the Volquartsen in and forget about it. It's better than OEM, redesigned or not.

If you don't put it in, you'll probably be fine with the current extractor. Until you aren't. And then you'll think, 'why didn't I just put in the other extractor that I already have that everyone says is better in every way'.

It's not peer pressure. It's simple logic. You bought it. Use it.

I'm referring to the ejector, not extractor. I should have stipulated that very clearly.

When new, my M&P's ejector was too far away from the bolt to allow reliable ejection of spent cases. Spent cases would be crushed by the bolt with regularity (2-5 out of 25). Sent it back to S&W, who tweaked the ejector and it's been great ever since. This is a fix that the end user can do pretty easily, but I wanted them to do it (it was new, dangit).

S&W may have changed the extractor in the Sport models, but I don't know that for certain. Again, I had a problem with ejection, not extraction.

I don't know that the ejector has changed. There were reports early (IIRC) on that the ejector was coming in contact with the bolt, and the fix was to ever so slightly bend the ejector away from the underside of the bolt. Also, this area of the bolt tends to pick up a lot of residue, so make sure it is cleaned regularly.

Good summation. The issue is the POSITIONING of the EJECTOR. We've been thru this a bunch if anyone does a search. The EJECTOR needs to be high enough to be almost in contact with the underside of the bolt and laterally the "tip" of the ejector "hook" should be almost in contact with the rib on the underside of the bolt. By "almost in contact" I mean less than the thickness of a piece of paper clearance or barely contacting. The ejector is adjusted by (carefully) bending it. I adjusted mine and have adjusted the ejectors for guys with 15-22s at my home club. I'm not parroting what I've read...

After 5 yrs of shooting Rimfire and Steel Challenge and Bowling Pins Matches (and lots of practice rds) I still have the original extractors and springs and plungers in place. My 15-22s are EXTREMELY reliable. The only other reliability change I've made is that the Giessele triggers I run have extra power hammer springs and I use Colt 901 trigger and hammer pins that are longer and sit flush with the outside of the lower.

Where do you get the Colt 901 Hammer & Trigger pins. What Geissele Trigger are you using. I have 2 S3G w/3# springs in my Colt M4's that I really like for a CQB Gun with a Red Dot sight. You can absolutely hammer targets.

Have you ever seen an EDM machine like the ones that make their parts?

I was having some FTE problems with my M&P 22. Bought the Volquartsen and haven’t had a problem since, even with some questionable ammo.
I think it better design than the original. Not sure, but I also believe the angle is slightly different

I installed the new extractor and took it back to the range, using the same box of ammo as before. Not one single jam. Not one. Amazing. Why doesn’t Smith make this an OEM part???

I changed mine, only 1 FTF per mag but this has now cured it. I did rack a mag of rounds through it and noticed that the last few mm of bolt travel was smoother.

I guess I got lucky because shoots up anything I put in it. Didn't have to buy a new extractor, trigger, hammer, bi pod, tri pod, turn signals, white wall tires.........
