Howdy

I know the question “what optic” gets old, but I really need to know.

What gun: M&P 22LR Sport PC
What use: practice for AR, and use for Steel Challenge, USPSA, etc.

I have an Extar EP9 Carbine with a Holosun 503CU. I like the low profile of this optic but bending my head down so low is a little awkward for a female.
So…what optic would you think would work well for competition and for comfort on this rifle?
FYI I am not a serious competitor, just a newbie getting started.

So far I am looking at Holosun 512c or Vortex Spitfire

I certainly could endorse the Vortex Spitfire 3x Prism Scope, because I have one on an AR build that is just outstanding. My rifle is chambered in .223 Wylde, so I have no experience with it on a .22lr.

I personally like the Primary Arms 3x SLx Microprism. I love their ACSS Raptor Reticle and it has mounting options for just about any height you need. I run mine on the 1.98" config and I can instantly acquire the target as the reticle lands on whatever I'm looking at when I shoulder the rifle.

MoGunGuy here is mentioning something that too few shooters pay attention too. How the rifle, pistol or revolver fits the individual. Which also includes grips and sights. All of this is necessary for a combat or competition weapon to be successful.

The gun salesman at your big box sporting goods store is unlikely to know how to fit you. Recommend red/green dots on the internet may only help if that one person has the exact same body measurements as you do, with the same rifle, pistol etc.

If you belong to a club seek out the help of the really active shooters in the discipline you wish to enter. Rangemasters, RSO's that work in that field can be a good resource too. Armed Women of America while more pistol oriented may have members that also shoot in your desired field. They would be extremely helpful.

I have had excellent results with a Bushnell AR223 1-4x scope with the “horseshoe” shaped reticule.

Settled on the Holosun HE503CU in green. I’ll try the higher mount first to see how much I have to bend my head down. There’s the option of a low mount if needed.
Main reasons why I selected this one is 1) versatility of the dot selections (ring for big plates, dot for more precision games when needed). My local range runs steel challenge, bullseye, etc. (2) I’m bad about turning optics off when finished. Shake awake and auto off will keep me focused on other things.

That sounds like a good choice for your needs. The prism type optic is not the same as an unmagnified red dot, and eye relief becomes much more critical, as does reduction in FOV.

I have come to like 1x6 optics. At 1x they can be run similar to a red dot with both eyes open, especially with the illuminated reticle center turned up, then zoomed to 6x for more precision shots.

I was going to suggest a riser. I have a 503 to put on mine as well, but I can't seem to make myself pull the cheap little Browning Reflex off to try the Holosun... I keep telling myself that if I go to that style red dot, I'll want 3X too... who knows, though. Maybe I'll try it sooner than later ha
