My VTAC II, which has about 1000 rounds through it, is suddenly firing 2 rounds per trigger pull. The first time it did this, I thought that maybe I did not have it tight enough against my shoulder. I thought also maybe I had gotten oil in the trigger area. The cleaned it and shot it indoors the next day. No issues (though I was not shooting it with front and rear bags). Took it out again, and again was shooting it with support front and rear (stand in front, small bag in rear) and once again it was firing 2 rounds instantaneously with 1 trigger pull. I KNOW that it was nice and tight against my shoulder today. A guy next to me, who shoots in 1000 yard matches, said that with it firing 2 rounds that fast, it was the trigger. I have not touched the trigger. Time for it to go to the Mother ship? It also had a dead trigger 2 times today, I only pulled the trigger 3 times, so that is pretty bad. When I say it had a dead trigger, it would not move when pulled. I pull out the mag and racked the charging handle and the round that came out looks like it was hitting something. The tip was slightly malformed. It has done this with multiple factory ammos. The first time it started doing this, I thought that it was because I was shooting a different brand of ammo than I usually do (I was shooting UMC, I usually shoot PMC). Today I was using my favorite PMC. It has never acted up before now.

Check for anything obstructing the operation of the disconnector. Check to see if the disconnector spring is in place. Check to make sure the trigger components are aligned.

While at the range last weekend, my buddy's AR-15 went into 2-round burst mode. The trigger pin walked, cocked the trigger group a little sideways, which interfered with the operation of the disconnector.

Other than that, call the mother ship.

I had a AR15 that did that too after a trigger job. Kinda spooky. After talking to a few folks more experienced than me I found out it was operator error. I was told to follow through with the trigger pull. Evidently there is enough recoil bounce, especially from a bench rest or bags, for your finger to brush the trigger during recoil. Once I started following through or, for maybe a better mental image, hold the trigger back after the shot and feel it reset when you let off, the double taps ended.

FWIW my groups shrank by 0.5" also.

Good idea, but I already hold the trigger back. I am not bump firing it.

With the description of a dead trigger, and double fires, I agree with Japes... sounds like something got down into your trigger. A blown out primer perhaps?

Exactly. The problem lies with the disconnector. If you check your trigger group and can't find anything obviously wrong, call the S&W mothership. The VTAC II has a Geissele Super V trigger in it covered under warranty. I'm sure they'll jump on your issue immediately. A VTAC II with only 1K rounds downrange all of a sudden unintentionally going double puts three company's reputations at stake.

What is weird to me is that it started after I cleaned it. The first time it did it, I thought maybe some oil had gotten in the trigger assembly group.. So I sprayed some gun cleaner/degreaser in the trigger area and tried to clean it with qtips. That worked for 1 trigger pull. When I got home I sprayed the area heavily with gun cleaner, let it drip out. I also sprayed canned air into it (until everything froze, lol) trying to dislodge anything that might be there. After it thawed, I sprayed more gun cleaner and let it hang upside down to try to flush anything that might be there. After all that, I shot it indoors for maybe 20 rounds and no issues. I did not clean it after shooting it indoors. I took it to the outdoor range, and once again shot it supported (front stand and rear small sandbag) and I am positive that it was tight against the pocket. And it started doing it again.. I was using support because I was shooting at 200 yards. The plus side is that at least 5 of the 6 rounds that went through my barrel ended up on target, all in the black and one in the X ring.

I am going to have my smith take a quick look at it tomorrow to see if he sees something no one else has (which I don't think he will). But I think that it is going back to the Mothership.

Sorry you are having issues... please keep us posted. I'm curious what your smith, or S&W find as the culprit.

Update:

I brought the gun to the smith. He looked it over and sees nothing wrong with it. So I guess I will call S&W. sigh..

Just talked to Smith & Wesson. They have already sent me a shipping label. They are in Summer shut down, but their guys will be back on the 10th.

My Opinion!

Look I understand that it's not apples top apples but many Mil Spec triggers do not do well with some modern super lubes. I would try hosing the trigger area with brake cleaner and if that fixes the problem re lube it with regular oils and very little grease. I hope that this works for you! Geo. T.

Geo..
After the first session when it acted up, I did spray cleaner, degreaser in the trigger assembly. I did it multiple times. I blew out the trigger assembly area with canned air after I sprayed gun cleaner/degreaser in the area. I also sprayed degreaser there and let it drip out (after putting it on paper towels upside down). I never put grease in the trigger area, only some gun oil. It has a Geissele trigger in it, so the trigger should be working right. Nothing is perfect though, that is why I sent it back to the Mothership.

I got a phone call from FedEx this morning. They are delivering a package that will need to be signed by an adult tomorrow. My AR coming home?!? If so, that is fast turn around. They have only had it for 2-3 weeks.

**Update**
The VTAC II just arrived from Smith a couple of minutes ago. It arrived there on 8-11 and the repair order is dated 8-17. A lot faster than the guy at smith said it would be (he said 4-5 weeks). They replaced the hammer and the trigger. I have not shot it yet (like I said, it just arrived) but I will report how it does after shooting it. Excited!!

Great! I sure wish they were more descriptive on their repair notes though

Me too Cyphertext! The youngest daughter and I took it out yesterday and shot it. It appears to be fixed. I will hold off judgment on that until I shoot it some more. To me it felt like they put a stock trigger in it. I took it to the indoor range last night to have the guys I compete with try it. The general consensus is that I am too used to the trigger on my Weatherby .308 and that the trigger feels great to them.

I need to check the trigger pull. Along with a lot of take up (at least it felt like it to me), the trigger felt heavier. I know that my old trigger's pull was 4.25 lbs.

I wish you lived closer. I'd love to take some measurements. If it has the standard two piece trigger and hammer design, the problem could have been the sear engagement.

Rastoff, I would love it if we lived closer to you. It would be fun shooting with you. Plus I love Tehachapi. I have spent many a day at the loop watching trains. I used to live in Santa Clarita until we moved in 05. We are hoping to visit family in Jan. My Dad wants to take us shooting. I believe his range is near Edwards. Heck, it could be on Edwards as far as I know. All I know is that it has a 1000 yard rifle range. Our range only goes out to 200 yards, so it should be interesting. I figure I can bring my AR and only bring the 10 round mags, plus I plan to bring my Weatherby .308. Not sure which hand guns to bring yet.
