In New Jersey we are fortunate to have an enlightened legislature which mandates that we must have a permit to purchase for each handgun we acquire. And unless you jump through special hoops only one handgun purchase in a 30 day period. I often wonder how people west and south of New Jersey surve without these common sense restrictions.

In regards to the title of this thread, I put in for several permits in October and the application was complete from my end on October 31. Then the wait began.

15 years ago when applications were all on paper it once took 6 months. Earlier this year I got approved online for permits within 3 weeks. Now I heard it is back up to two months.

Will keep the Forum posted.

In Michigan, if you go to you local law department the 'wait' period is 3-5 days for a handgun BUT if you go to a FFL dealer and want something you get it immediately presuming the 4473 passes the call to the Feds!

Sort of a Related Question:

Question for NJ folks: my PA son (now a Capt.in the U.S.Army) is transferring from Ft.Hood (Texas) to Ft.Dix (NJ). He's got several nice handguns and long guns, most of which I've gifted to him and his wife. What will he need to do to stay on the right side of the laws there regarding his guns? I'd hate to see any of them confiscated.

Here's a list of what he'll have to transfer, if it matters:

Colt 1903 (32 ACP)
Remington Derringer (41 RF)
Walther PPK (22 LR)
S&W 10-4 (38 Spl)
S&W 36-10 (38 Spl)
S&W Shield (9mm)
Ruger Mk.II (22 LR)

Izhmash B 7-2 KO (22 LR)
Ruger PC Carbine (9 mm)
Remington 1100 (28 ga.)
Winchester 94AE (44 Mag)
S&W (Howa) 1500 (308 Win)
Springfield M1A (308 Win)

Thanks - S2

There is a new law that says that people moving to NJ with their handguns need to go through a process similar to getting a firearm owners identification card and permits to purchase. The law is less than a year old and I never had to do it as I am a long time subject of the Peoples Republik of NewJerseystan.

You may as well come out here to Australia. In my state, every firearm (Pistol, shotgun, rifle, air gun) requires a Permit to Purchase. The current wait time is about 40 days due to short staffing at the states Police Firearms Registry. They use to get done within 10 days pre-Covid.

Here in Maine with or without a CCW, walk in to the gun shop, buy as many as you want, fill form 4473, dealer makes the call, walk out the door. 20 minute average.
Oh, did I mention Maine has one of the lowest crime rates in the country? Guess maybe guns aren't the problem.

Same I NV. I throw my CCW around like it's a baseball. :D
Same. I am sure you remember during covid/Summer of Love when NICS checks were taking up to six weeks but people like you and I were walking out the door with our new purchase 15 minutes later.

If memory serves me correctly (and my sure somebody will correct me if needed) NJ doesn't allow hollow points.
If that is the case your son needs to know that.

Ran the NICS check Monday November 21
Approved November 28

Total time between applying for permit to purchase and NICS approval one month

Would have been fine if only 30 days quicker

In NJ you cannot carry hollow points even without a gun.

Last I checked they can be bought, taken home, kept at home, and taken to the range as long as you do not make stops or detours.

Thanks for the replies and advice on NJ gun transfers and hollow point ammo. We (sort of) solved our transfer problem by having my son store all of his guns (and ammo) with me here in PA while he's busy with his move. I'll let him sort out his handgun permits and figure out how to get them across the PA-NJ state line when that's appropriate. In the meantime, I'll enjoy re-acquainting myself with some of those "gifts". -S2

People moving into NJ have to file a registration form that can list multiple guns at one time, according to one of the new laws.

Your best, most up to date source of information when your son moves is to contact the NJ State Police Firearms unit.

Some PC Carbines qualify as banned assault weapons in NJ

I have a friend in NJ. Wait for a Firearms ID card. (once every 5 years now) Then wait for a pistol purchase permit (one per month). Then run to the gun store with your FID and permit only to find out you need to wait another +/- 7 days for the NICS check.
