I was in walmart today to pick up some of the 50 packs of Federal Lightning 22LR and the associate in sporting goods limited me to 6 boxes. They said they were new but they were trained there was a policy of no more than six boxes of ammo per customer.

Has anyone else run into this? As recently as a couple weeks ago I had been able to buy 10 - 20+ with no one so much as batting an eye.

Apparently the limit is simply the number of boxes, so you could get six 50-packs or six 550 packs.

Maybe this is a response to me buying all of the stock from the local Walmarts then going to the range and shooting it in one big M&P-15-22 binge. :D

If it's a policy change it new because I have bought more the 6 boxes numerous times at my local walmart and not all that long ago. I'm not sure where you live but if it's in a non gun friendly state it could be a new local law that they are forced to comply with.

A year ago my local wmart started this. We can only get 2 boxes at a time, of each box. For example I could get 2 boxes of 525's, 2 boxes of 50's and 2 boxes of .45.

My Wal-Mart took their sign down over a year ago. I have not bought over 6 but I've seen others, I go every week. In my area they are the cheapest game in town.

I'll ask on my next trip in (some time today). I've been stocking up but kind of dollar cost averaging, four boxes ever trip. Not that prices change but they are asking if the ammo is for a handgun or not. They are walking a thin line. They dropped guns so they could sell more al-k-hall, more money in it. I'm sure they are concerned about the number of bad folk getting bad press having bought their ammo at walmart but 3300 rounds is well north where I would think. Perhaps it's a balance between being able to say they are doing something and getting folks like us pissed enough to go elsewhere (online?).

Saddly Super Walmart is our main store for almost everything so it's easy for me.

I suspect this is the reason. My Walmart has strangely (sarcasm) not carried the 9mm 250-rd bulk pack for ~3 months.

So that is why they dropped guns? I had wondered why since their sales seemed pretty good. My local WM dropped guns then about 6 mos later moved and became a Super WM with groceries and beer / wine.

Unfortunately, it takes my local WM about 10 minutes to get someone to unlock the ammo case. If it were easier, I would tend to make more smaller purchases.

Interestingly, the Walmart here just started to sell long guns a couple weeks ago.

That would be a good day for me. After about 10 trips well over 10 minutes waiting (including calling the front desk to overhead page someone with the key several times) I called the manager. He appologied and sent an assistant manager who gave me 20% off the three boxes I bought (22WMR). It was a nice gesture that helped.

On the postive side the guy running the case has kept it well stocked compared to every other walmart I've ever been in.

I picked up some hard cider the other night and some ammo at the same time. The computer asked if I was over 40, by 10 years I answered. Again, something simple to start making things better as drinking and gunpower never mix well.

Our Walmart dropped guns about 2 years ago, but just 3 weeks ago put them back in. They also in the past year started actually stocking ammo, and keeping it well stocked. In years past the Winchester 50 and 100 rd packs for 40 S&W were all they carried (suits me, its cheap and what I buy), but now they have Federal and UMC as well as another Remington line. Strangely, .223, they only keep one brand.

Ammo and beer I can always buy no problem. When I try to get some spray paint or carb cleaner, whoa, hold on, two forms of ID please.

lol, I had my boys with me, one of them was holding a DVD with an R rating to put on the conveyor, the clerk asked me who the movie was for.

That's probably because nobody will unlock the case to *sell* any of it. :D

So, as far as WM is concerned it's okay to mix drinking and firearms so long as one is over 40? ;)

That age limit of 40 new one for me. I knew you have to be 26 to rent a car and 35 to be president. Didn't know you had to be 40 to buy ammo and alcohol. Learned something new...

There are several items I've bought and saw the screen pop up to ask if I am over 40. I always wondered what that was about.

A little over a year ago, the WM around me started the 6 box limit, and sometimes was even lower. One manager told me it was because they sold out so fast, they wanted to give more customers a chance to buy, rather than sell all 100 boxes to the first guy through the door after they restock. I'd call and they'd say they had what I needed in stock, then get there and they would be out. Until this I always picked up my ammo for the weekend at lunch on Friday. But since I could no longer buy that way, ..

I gave up on buying local, and started ordering in mass quantity online form large reputable vendors. Get fresher ammo cheaper. Have not been back to WM since, so I don't know what current policy is. And the best thing is, this way I "have" to buy surplus ammo cans to store my ammo in:). I have a thing for surplus ammo cans, you needs at least 2 dozen, or well, maybe 3 dozen.:)

this is a huge talk over in the 1911 forums

I myself last week bought all this at my Walmart (besides the Kimber)

These are from my understanding:

Walmart Super Centers will not carry ammo

Walmart is the distributor for Winchester reason why it is so cheap there

6 box limit goes for certain Walmart, reason unknown.

I've talked with the Store manager bout this and he believes it doesn't matter who has the money. It's not like they sell it to anyone. Must be a FOID card carry. He also understand the price hike coming May 1 of it being 5%-15%. If for some reason the system only allows 6 boxes, he said he'll just ring it up different transactions.

The only issue I have is that .45 Auto is very hard to get and rarely restocked. I take what I can and leave no box behind.

As for 9mm, plenty and always restocked.

I stop by everyday home from work only to catch if they have .45s, especially the Value Pack 100 rounds 230gr for $32.00
the 9mm 115gr VP 100 rounds go for $20.00

Prices really can't be beat unless I shop internet bulk

I use to get the CCI mini Mags there for $6.00

one guy in Texas got these at his Walmart... if only they stocked like this at mine

All of the WalMart Super Centers around here sell ammo and guns. Beer and wine as well.

the 6 box limit is not a corporate walmart policy, but the sporting goods manager and if you call corporate office and let them know there doing this you might find the limit of 6 gone.

and atleast at my walmart they store ammo under the counter which again is not a corporate walmart policy, they have a locked cage in the back where it most be stored if its over stock.
