I do not go to WM very often but today I needed a few garden center items and auto stuff. There is always something that makes in PITA!

Wasn't crowded (yet) went in the garden center entrance (can not check out there anymore) Got my few things, slid over to automotive and get what I needed (I never go to other side of the store with grocery and all that, So far so good.

So I go to check out in the new and improved self check out. I have 5 or 6 items,
The last items the bar code was messed up! Alert Alert Help needed. So a non English speaking worker came over and tried to enter her password 3 times, OK she fixed it after 15 minutes of standing there,

I am 20 feet from the exit, escape is near! But no!. Then some other non English speaker wants to see my receipt (I have it in my hand showing her.) Counts my items OK I am FREE!

I was going to refuse, but was already ticked off enough

Years ago there was a lawsuit against WM for them stopping you at the exit asking for receipt, Pretty much you were accused of shoplifting while still in the store (mostly at the garden center. )It's not Costco where you signed up and paid membership and agreed to being checked at the exit.

Yes, shoplifting is a problem but you can not stop someone right after they get out the check out line!

"That's all I am gonna say about that"

I used to think like you Muss but I realized that these poor schleps are doing a job because that need the money, not for the love of abuse from customers. I do not go to Walmart for this and other reasons, but if I DO go, I go in eyes wide open, grit my teeth, get it over with quick and leave.

I don't exactly have an opinion one way or the other. Here in flyover country they generally only ask if you have stuff that's not in a bag . . .

At the Shoprite I usually go to they always have an employee on duty at the self checkouts to help with problems.

I usually go through self-checkout at WM, seldom have a problem with it. At least here, if there is a checkout problem, the employees speak English. We usually offer to show the receipt ticket to the kid at the exit door, he/she usually just waves us past without looking at anything. I guess we look honest. At Sam's Club, they always check, at least spot check, a few items against the receipt. I don't mind.

Not sure if every State is the same but in my loss prevention and law enforcement experience shoplifting applied when you passed the last point of a checkout and heading to the door.

Your complaint reminds me of the movie A Few Good Men when Jack Nicholson is giving his speech. Only instead of the part about questioning the way it is done it would go like this.

"You want cheaper prices but you question the way Walmart does it".

People at the door just trying to do a job so get over it or follow your first advice and don't go to Walmart.

I avoid Wallyworld when ever possible. But there is sure some good people watching there.

...after I hit these shores I had to learn the language.
I think it was Churchill who said, "Two counries divided by a a common language"

I've had that problem with telephone "support". I try to be patient, because as Caje said, they're just poor schleps trying to do a job. I will admit, though, that after building up aggro navigating multiiple iterations of some phone tree systems, my patience is pretty much shot. If I have to press more than about 4 buttons ("because our menu options have changed") I'm pretty much on full boil

Florida is one of the five states where you are legally required to show your receipt if asked. New York is also one of the five . . .

They can ask but you are not required. They can only detain you if they have probable cause,

It is probably due to the self checkout area where people don't scan items.

No other stores that we shop at ever ask (other than Costco)

I can find many websites that state the opposite.

I took an item back to Walmart. The checker at the door stopped me and asked if I had a return. Took item put a tag on it with date and time. Went to customer service and the clerk looked at item and time and date. It's good you have that we are getting so many items without sales slip and without incoming tags. Reading between the lines theft is rampant and Walmart is looking for ways to keep people from returning stolen items for $$.

Lol I often wondered if they can LEGALY ask to see your receipts

They can legally ask to see your underwear but you don't have to show it.

When they ask for my receipt, I just say, "No thanks" and keep walking.

I've been in retail for many years and I know how LP deals with a suspected shoplifter.

Good news is that if they falsely apprehend you, you can sue and they'll settle. One of my LP managers told me that some people fake shoplift and make an annual income in the six figures.

My LPs have always said that "concealment" qualifies, such as stuffing things into a pocket or purse.

I'll tell y'all a secret. Oprima dos para Espanol. Your call is routed to California, Arizona, or Florida and you get someone who speaks idiomatic English. When they start talking in Spanish just say, "I'm sorry, I must have hit the wrong button. Can you help me?"

All customers having to show a receipt because some people shoplift sounds a bit like gun control. The majority has to suffer because of the actions of a few.

As for the business being discussed, I would only go there if sentenced by a court of competent jurisdiction.

I live in NY. I LOVE WM. Their stuff is cheaper than other stores for certain items. That's why I buy those items there..

I take a bag with me because the little baskets are no longer available. I refuse to push a cart for stuff that simply fits in my single bag.

When I get to the self-checkout I take stuff out of my bag, scan it and put it back in the bag. As I walk out I have the receipt sticking out of my hand carrying the bag.

I have NEVER been asked about my purchase. The door "checker" smiles as I go out.

My local workers are all nice local people and any time I spoke to them they surely spoke English.

My son used to be the store manager at my local WM. He only moved on because he got a huge increase in pay and benefits at another venue. However, he always commented about how well his people were paid and they had good benefits, etc.

I rarely go to WalMart, usually because the hour is late and I need something right now.

My big complaints are that the express lanes aren't express, the self check out is slower than molasses, and they rarely have more than two registers open.
