Merry Christmas 2016. It was 240 years ago tonight that
General Washington crossed the Delaware as depicted in the
famous painting by Leutze.

The following morning, with his force, he attacked the Hessian
garrison at Trenton, and defeated them with very few casualties.

Watched Legends and Lies, The Patriots episode on Fox last night
and was re-inspired by the importance of this pivotal battle in
America's history.

I read 1776 by David McCullough years ago and recalled how
inspiring a read that was. Were it not for Washington we would
all be speaking English. No wonder he is called the father of
our country.

We have had many important and pivotal battles since that
time, but it was the one that made us Americans. Should
be required study in all of our schools.

GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Watching the Patriots last night I was surprised to see they portrayed the Hessians somewhat as war criminals. At least that was my impression. I've read a lot about the Revolution and never came across that. I did read that after the war, many Hessians stayed here and started families.

Using the mentality of our times, I would think that Americans would not be very tolerant of mercenaries coming here to kill us.
