Saw what was said to be a combat masterpiece?? opened cylinder and it has the number 5 stamp along with 5 digit SN# Owner said it was from 1951. Think it was a 5 screw. Decent shape, not alot of blue loss. no origional grips. wanted $400.00 for it. sorry didn't get a picture.
hadn't seen this one before, wasn't to sure on it or it's value.

Very possibly was correct. Prior to 1957 Model #'s weren't issued or stamped on S&W's. It would be better described as a K38. The numbers stamped in that gun were assembly and inspection numbers and have no meaning once it leaves the factory. The S/N is on the bottom of the gun-butt, and on that one probably on the barrel under the ejector rod, and on the back of the cylinder.

$400 is a reasonable price for one in the condition you describe.
