Watermelons

When I was just a youngster, around nine, my father would get us in
the car and drive out to a rancher friends place for a get together
and enjoy a watermelon or two in the warm summer day.

Outside there would finally be a table with the watermelon set
on top of it and Kay, the rancher would come out with his cutter.
He used a standard saw, turned upside down and it cut through
those watermelons like a hot knife through butter.

Back then we had to enjoy the seeded type but now the wife prefers
the seedless if she can find them.
Last week in our "Scolarie's I finally got to pick out the "Black" watermelon
that they bring in from California, that has a very dark green skin
and seedless and seeded seeds in it.
I have yet to get a bad one that was not ripe or had a nice sweet flavor........
unlike a LOT of seedless that we bring home and toss.

Vodka..? !!

My friends and I like a "Margareta" section with a touch of sea salt, if you are going to age a WM. :D

I live in SE Ohio, we put in a variety of small water melon, I forget the name of them. We had tried several over the years
with not much luck. These weren't much different. They didn't
have much taste, we fed them to the hogs. We were taking a
scouting trip the day after Thanksgiving for deer season that
came in following week. Walking down edge of garden to get
to woods we found one of these melons thatched under the
weeds. We cut in open and it was blood red and one of the
sweetest melons I ever ate. It had frosted prior but thatched
weeds may have protected it. I think in our area the melons
tend to start to rot before they ripen, due to short growing
season. Some guys grow decent melons but they put a lot of
effort in it, just as they do to grow the monster pumpkins.

Arkansas Black Diamonds, can't be beat. A friend of mine from the Navy visited me in the mid 70's and we stopped by an old man, my age now, on the street and I bought a 100 pound Black Diamond for $5.00. The guy from up north couldn't believe the size, took pictures.

Yeah yeah yeah, watermelons taste good. But this is the Smith & Wesson Forum, and it's a hot summer day outside!!
