I was 18-19(i'm 73 this August) a hardware store had a S&W model 39 and I bought it. I seem to remember the advertisement that came with the pistol mentioned a dust cover that attached by means of the slide stop on both sides 'going through it and two types of magazines(one civilian another military?) Anyone else remember this or am I just too old and forgetful? I've looked but, never see anything of these in any advertisement listed with any 39 for sale?

Early M39s did have a dust cover but it was discontinued probably because it was little used.

FWIW

These items are quite scarce today and if I recall, install and removal would leave marks on the finish.

Frankly, it's even somewhat difficult to find quality pictures of this very shortly used accessory, but no, your memory is absolutely valid.

I would love to see the advertisement that you remember. An ad for them would be even more scarce than an example of one.

I had a 39 in the late sixties. The dust cover was mentioned in the parts list, so I ordered one from S&W, and it fit easily and functioned properly. Don't recall any rubbing on the slide, either. Fine pistol, but I was young and stupid then, and often traded a perfectly good pistol for another perhaps perfectly good pistol. I don't do that much any more, thus the "more than I need, and not as many as I want" answer to improper questions.

here is a picture of the military mags.
My flier for the 39 is at work... I'll look for it tomorrow.

Hey S,B,. I too am 73 and your memory is not failing. I initially remember
the part being referred to as "an ejection port cover". Obviously to prevent
foreign material from gathering on or in the port. Still have some that I have picked up over the years. Where are they? Not a clue.
