I was reading this today about how the military handled their guns.
Weapons Status
Green: Weapon completely unloaded. In Afghanistan, service members will have at least one loaded magazine with their weapon. (A person can go from Green to firing bullets in probably 5-8 seconds, depending on various factors such as type of weapon, training level, etc.)
Amber: Magazine in weapon. No round in the chamber. Safety on. (Amber to firing in about two or three seconds if he already is holding a rifle. Some more seconds for a holstered pistol.)
Red: Round in chamber. Safety on. (Sometimes off depending on unit.)
Black: Out of Ammo. (The most dangerous status.)

I keep the Gov't 1911 in Red in the night stand. I keep the Mossberg 500 in Amber. I keep most others in Green.
I got a few in black. Just because I don't shoot them.
I keep my S&W15-22 in green.

What status do you use???

Lessee, the nightstand S&W 22A is always in Amber.

The S&W pre-Model 10 is in Amber as well, sorta, as it is a revolver.
5 in the cylinder, hammer on the empty. Remove from closet, pull, they're
done, so maybe closer to red, as there is no safety. 2 speed loaders on the
same shelf, always reachable in the dark.

All others locked up in gun cabinet in stages from Green through black, depending
on inventory and recent range events.

My S&W 15-22 isn't my HD gun so it's green

I keep my Glock 27 in amber inside my nightstand.

Dogs are Red

Everything else is greenish, I usually try and keep my ammo handy, but no magazines loaded.

I have 3 guns in my house
Glock 22 with weapon light - bed holster - RED
Glock 23 TV room magnetic holster coffee table- RED
Kahr P-9 office- under desk magnetic holster - RED

All of these guns have a trigger safety - no finger on trigger - gun is on safety. - the P-9 is also my CCW

HD/Carry is glowing red (no safety)

everything else is black. unloaded and stored.

kd4gij, you have got to be kidding on this one, right? If what you wrote is true, you have completely neglected firearm safety. There is such a small amount of time required to move a safety selector from safe to fire that it doesn't make sense to leave a "hot" firearm unattended in your home. The risk of an accidental discharge just doesn't warrant it. Keeping a round in the chamber of an automatic is prudent, but requires the safety engaged until you are prepared to discharge a round.

Your house, your gun, do what you wish. But I would guess that most knowledgeable firearms people would advise against it. Even a combat soldier in an active war zone doesn't leave his weapon in that status.

I almost forgot.... the Kimber lives in a state of red. From CCW to night stand on a daily basis. Everything else is green and secured in the safe.

Glock 31 - red in black hawk push button release holster on nightstand or in car or on me. Basicly it goes were I do.

Stoger custom coach double 12 - red in a rack mounted to the back of the head board.

everything else green and in the vault
