Weird Issue with My M&P 15-22

So I just picked up this gun, the previous owner expressed he put one mag through it, I was skeptical because how can anyone ONLY put one mag through this gun? The gun was super clean, not cleaned- like clean, new from the factory, w/ blue springs and all. I shot it for the first time the other day and it shot really well for the first 100rds, but then I started to have a lot of failure to feeds. The slide even dismembered one bullet from its casing. I would say my total FTF was 8, and 8 FTE. I was really bummed out, because I hate gun issues.

On to the weird part. I arrived home and prepared for cleaning by cycling the slide to ensure nothing was inside. Opened/closed bolt 7 times. When I removed the charging handle and bolt a shell casing came out and fell on the ground. Does that mean my issues were because a shell casing got stuck in the gun somewhere? I inspected the bolt and there was no scratching where the shell had been stuck and I dont even know where it could have been stuck as the shell fell to the floor. I am really hoping my gun issues were related to that casing and not much else.
The weird thing is I filled 2 mags at the end of the day and unloaded both rapidly with no issues. I was using a new gen mag and one old gen, but both had issues,

It's possible, sure.

Give it a good cleaning yourself, take the time to ensure magazines are loaded properly, and head to the range to see if the problem still exists.

I'm beginning to think the magazines have more issues than the rifles.

If you look in the ejection port with the bolt pulled back, not held open with the catch. You will see there is plenty of room for a spent shell casing to somehow get in there. There have been other members reporting they had one in the lower that fell out when they opened the rifle up for cleaning.
It might be an ejector issue.

I was using winchester. Some 555 pack from walmart for about $19 probably comparable to the remington golden

I've never had that happen before. Probably won't happen to you again haha. Run some CCI Minimags then maybe some CCI blazer bulk

yeah. id clean it real good and try the same ammo again. if it continues, try different ammo.. cci mini mags seem to be the most popular, federal bulk also works well...from what iv read remington is dirty and a no no...

I agree about the magazines having issues. I had some Fte problems, so I started useing 10 round mags and since then I have yet to have any type of problem.

You know i actually had the same exact problem when i was using Winchester 555 bulks with mine a while back. Maybe April? Anyways, took my 15-22 home, cleaned until my fingers bleed, did a full check of the firearm and could not find a single obvious issue. Went out to the back yard same problem. Gave the remaining ammo to my fiance's brother, bought CCI (usually standard velocity) never had the problem again.

lots of people seem to have issues with 555, try some federal bulk, and clean the hell out of it.

also in reference to magazines--if they arent loaded properly they will cause issues....

I have 8- 25 round mags and havent had a single issue since i researched proper magazine loading technique (ironically how i found this forum!)

Also agree the Federal Bulk and CCI ammo is arguably the best--however i have had great luck with Winchester M22 as well ( 1 FTF in 1000 rounds) so its an option as well

I only use CCI 40 gr ammo. Use it with my 15-22 and my AA kits for my Glocks. I only have 10 rd mags but my 25 rd mags just showed up today. Will have to give them a run through to check them. Ammo is what causes alot of issues with semi auto rimfires.

I know its off topic but:

Cheese- I use pretty much all CCI products through it now and for the most part stick to 40 grain if its an option. Personal opinion I guess. I tend to keep it as clean as possible. My cleaning kit includes everything from Hoppe's elite oil and cleaner and standard Hoppe's Universal Cleaning Kit to Bore Snakes for each caliber and picks/pads/microfiber clothes and my personal favorite utensil, A universal soft but firm bore brush.

Redbull- How are the new Winchester M22's? I live in a tiny town and ordering is the only way to get specialty ammo (besides what I reload for the .308, .40 and 5.56.) I did get my hands on the CCI AR Tactical's when they came out. I didn't honestly notice anything wonderful about it. Functioned essentially the same as a CCI Standard Velocity, which is my bread and butter.

the m22 has been the only ammo on par with CCI i have shot...however i also got 3000 rounds of it on closeout at Scheels...so when it is gone i will probably go back to good old Federal Bulk

if you stumble on it on a good deal its been great for me...

None of my 22s will function corectly with winchester bulk. Well except the marlin bolt. All work fine with federal bulk from WW and ofcorse enything from cci works fine
