Here is mine.
Back in 1989 I was at Ft. Lee VA going through training to change my MOS from 82C to 76Y. One morning we just returned from our typical 0430 4-mile run and were standing in company formation waiting the daily information session from the 1st Sgt. The 1st Sgt. is just getting started when the XO walks up and hands him a note. 1st Sgt looks at the note, looks at the XO and asks, "You want me to read this now Sir?". XO nods yes and steps back. The 1St Sgt. heaves a sigh and reads a note that went roughly like this:
At 0230 our time the nation of Libya launched a nuclear warhead at the USS Kennedy in the Med and a state of war now exists between our two countries. At 0330 our time the Marines established a beachhead in Libya and are awaiting reinforcement from Units of the 82nd that are in range.
As of now this base is on total lockdown and all telephones are strictly off limits. When you are dismissed you will return to your bunks and await further orders. If you are Army Reserve you have just been activated. If you have completed more than 2/3rd of your MOS training congratulations, you just graduated. If you are National Guard you will wait for the National Guard Liaison Officer to receive orders from your State Command. Those of you who are Regular Army I hope you like this place because you just became Cadre.
And if you forgot what day it is. April Fools.
There were people in tears and I was seriously wondering if I'd see my wife again before I shipped out. But he did it well.
