Guys, and gals....got some ammo from a storage unit sale.
At least I think it's ammo. I see "7.62" but not sure exactly what it is. Help! ...please!

Be aware it may be corrosive ammo (the primers anyway).
If 7.62 x 54r it could have a 147 grain (light ball) or 174 grain (heavy ball) bullet.
I usually pull the bullets and reuse them. The powder goes on the lawn and the steel cases get tossed.

wyo-man

Each "Spam can" contains 440 rounds of Soviet light ball ammo (147 gr), steel core bullet, in a copper washed steel case. The Lot number is E81 from 1973 made in factory 188, supposedly Klimov (AKA Klimovsk) or Novosibirsk, where I think the Klimov factory was relocated when the Wehrmacht was knocking on the gates of Moscow..

Yes and yes. Some years back a friend and I bought one of those cases and split the cost and ammo. It is good strong ammo and if you shoot it I suggest you use Sweets 762 to clean out your barrel. The stuff is FILTHY. lol

If I'm not mistaken, the silver tape on the crate and spam cans denotes silver tipped ball. Hope you have one of the can openers to open the cans. Definitely wear heavy gloves, eye protection as the edges left behind the can opener are seriously sharp. Frank

can you give any more details on the storage unit? previous owner, why the sale, etc?= is this ammo ''common''??

When I was buying the stuff it was $125 a case delivered. I sold my last spam can of 440 rounds for $225 last weekend.

I've shot 2 cans of this stuff through my MN. Accuracy isn't great by any means, but it's a cheap way to knock the heck out of steel at 300 yds.
Definitely corrosive primers, after a shooting session I spray the barrel with a mix of 10% Ballistol and 90% water. Rifle bore still looks brand new.
I read somewhere the powder used in these is very similar to 4895.

Liberal use of water is they key to breaking down the corrosive priming salts. I also use Ballistol and water and have never had issues with corrosion- and I've shot A LOT of corrosive ammo over the years because it was very cheap and plentiful at one time.

Thank you so much to everyone! This place never disappoints. I wish it was 7.62×39mm. Could have bought an AK then. I own storage units. It was left behind. I don't want a MN. I will sell it. Looks like $200 a can is going price. Shipping sure sucks though. Thanks again everyone!

SPECIAL SHOUT OUT: to LVSteve. That is a lot of great info!
