Went down to Springfield today w/a Buddy and had a wonderful time.
Called the Customer Support number a few days ago asked about tours, was put in touch w/a gentleman who arranges them. Was told 5or6 people were needed for a tour but he might be able to hook us up w/a tour already scheduled. Sure enough there was a 10AM tour, a pack of Cub Scouts!
The kids were quite well behaved, a few times I had to stop and think what I was like at their age.
The Tour Guide was a retired S&W employee, very knowledgable and good w/both big and little people. When the tour was winding down he told my Buddy and I to stay put, the scouts had to finish up but he'd take the two of us back into the production area and cover some more.
It was more relaxed, he knew everybody and was able to give us a much closer look at some of the processes and the workers could answer our questions directly.
Everyone we came in contact was extremely friendly and polite.
I'm very impressed the security officers are actual S&W employees instead of being from a contracted firm.
The whole thing is a real class act.
We went over to the range/store complex a short distance away. For a very reasonable fee I was able to have the use of a lane,a gun and a box of ammo. The other day when I'd called I asked about bringing my own firearm and ammo. S&W policy had no problem w/this except Wolf ammo was not allowed. It was pointed out to me that my bringing a firearm into Mass was a gray area and that the law allowed it if I were to participate in a competition(which doesn't have to be officially sanctioned). My thinking was that my Buddy and I would have a Fri the 13th match.
I rented a 945 and shot it alongside my 845 for a comparrison. It was great!
Didn't have enough time to see the Firearms Museum so will have to go back to Springfield again.

Any reason why they do not want "Wolf" ammo on their range?
I asked, was told that Wolf has some steel in the bullet itself, not good for the range. Not familiar w/the stuff. Shooting my own reloads was no problem at all.
What was rather funny was I asked permission of the Range Officer to pick up my brass. He asked me if I was from out of state, when I said yes he said no. Explained Mass law forbids non-Mass folks from getting ammo or components and the brass was considered a component even though it was from my own reloads I'd just fired. Didn't argue, guy was just doing his job.

You will really enjoy the museum. I recently had a tour from Dwayne Charron, started at Smith in 1942 at 16 years old. He became head of R&d for 30 years., invented the spherical bushing , designed the Sigma[rush job and he never liked it. is also a fan of hammer strike pistols. He was the head of the Smith "skunkworks" but somewhat bristles at the use of that term. It was like walking arm and arm with a piece of living history. He is a very spry very sharp 84 year old.

No doubt that's to help control crime in NYC.

Did you bring you Glock and SKS?

Sounds like an enjoyable tour. S&W was probably still celebrating their great sales/earnings quarter announced the previous day. They are at "full capacity production" for the balance of the year. Current backorders are at $123 million versus $22 million last year and the 2009 initial new product shipments are not included in the $123 million of backorders!

I have taken the tour a couple times. It was interesting both times. I have been to the museum a couple times too. They have a place upstairs where you need to special permission to get into. The neatest things I remember were a drum like thing that was filled with 1911s and dropped to the resistance in France by parachute and a civil war musket that was destroyed by the opponent's ball being shot right down the barrel. They also had a musket with a ball dent in the side of the barrel. It was also the first time I ever saw a wall gun, or maybe it was a fort gun? It was probably 20 feet long! Very cool place.

Do you think France will drop guns to us if we get in trouble?

They are talking about the S&W museum.

Sounds like you went to the Springfield Armory museum. Roundgunner, they used that round drum with 1911's in it to store and preserve the weapon. They also do the same with rifles. The second floor has some real valuble and rare firearms. Regards, Bob

Bob, Was wondering if you'd appear here. As stated, did get down, saw the S&W Museum but need to make another trip for the Springfield Armory Museum.
Got over to No Berwick this AM, although finishing touches still continue on the building all the steel is up and a few folks were testing it. It's turned out really nice.
Take Care, Kevin
