WHAT 1911 FOR YOU

Just Bought a Remington R1 1911 , can't wait to shoot it. I will give a Range report and Pictures when I do.

I bought the R1 too, and for me if performs just great. I think the Remington is often overlooked, due to it being pretty new, and not yet popular.
Love mine.

I currently own 1911's from Remington, Kimber, Sig, Colt, Dan Wesson, and Ruger. They range in size from 3" Ultras to Commanders to Full Size 5" platforms. I enjoy all of them, but for the money, the Ruger SR 1911 CMD is the best buy and a GREAT entry-level 1911. Good luck with your choice.

1911

I like my sigs (wifes) a lot. She shoots the 5 inch, I like the 4.2 better, and we fought over the ultra until I got her the P938. It is really sweet now since I changed the hammer spring, polished it up, and replaced the trigger. And the taurus, it shoots great and is so easy to carry.

Range Officer, 9mm if you like, .45 if you come to your senses. :) I've owned several 1911s, currently have a Champion, the RO will be my next.

I own a bunch of them but my favorites are made by Les Baer.

I can only speak from my limited experience with 1911s but I can second the earlier recommendation of the rock island armory 1911. I have the tactical model (skeletized trigger, beaver tail), finish has held up expertly, the fitting is great and it shoots better than I can, it usually prints one big hole. I don't know what your budget is, but I was between buying a budget 1911 (<$600) or going for something "high-end" (>$1200) and I haven't regretted my decision, used the left-over funds for another gun, the best kind of way to spend the extra cash! Only big complaint with the RIA was the terrible wooden grips, easy fix.

Smith and Wesson all the way for me. I have two and I love them.

I've got two. The Springer was rough when I got it. Accurate and 100% reliable. Put a full length guide rod in for awhile, a solution without a problem. Now just the grips and the slide stop are not stock. The Colt is plain but very nice. I don't shoot it but it has been shot a bit. Can't say which I like better. Joe

The new e-series 1911's are the best 1911's they are. I've owned many 1911's over the last thirty years and S&W got it right with the e-series.

Springfield is bringing out the Range Officer in 9mm. Haven't seen one yet, but if it's as much value for money as the RO in .45, it will be hard to beat.

But really, there's no need for a 1911 in 9mm. That's why Browning and Saive invented the Hi Power. Get yourself a P-1935 and find out how good a 9mm can be.

I had a SA Range Officer...I don't like adjustable sights on a 1911, but I bought it because it was set up (except for the sights) exactly as I wanted it to be, and I figured I could just change the sights. Then I found out that the slide cut is not the standard cut for most sights, and there are only a couple of sights that will fit...and they are expensive. The RO is a great pistol, but I don't know why they selected the sights they did for it.

I really like the fact that the e series guns don't have a FPS. A lot of people don't like an external extractor on a 1911, but S&W makes one that works. Funny thing is, almost all semiautomatic pistols made today do have external extractors.

I have a NIB S&W stainless 1911 Gov model target. up for sale here on this site. If you are interested in checking it out I think you can find it by searching my user name "JEFF S."

Good luck.

I think you really can't go wrong with any of the ones you have mentioned. It really depends alot on what your budget is.

I just picked up a Rock Island 1911 Tac II FS VZ. It shoots great. Also bought some WC 8 round mags for it as well. This gun has lots of great features:

Ambi Safety
Fiber front sight
adjustable rear sight
skeletonized hammer and trigger
8 round clip
deep mag well
VZ textured G10 grips (love them)
etc. etc. etc.

It cost me less then 600.00 once it was all said and done...

Great value, great shooter... http://us.armscor.com/products/tac-1911-ii-fs-45acp

If you have a higher budget, it is really hard to beat the Springers... Whether it is the RO, or Loaded... My favorite 1911 to date is the Sig Scorpion 1911... Great gun.

I have heard great things about the Remington R1 models as well.

didn't see STI mentioned. they have a wide variety of 1911 guns to fit most budgets. i have a targetmaster and a trojan. both are excellent guns. also have a dan wesson, a nice gun for the money but pricier than most of the entry level guns.

There are lots of re-pro 1911's on the market.

I don't know what the best repro is, but for out of the box first choice, Colt - the original - can't be beat.

All the 1911's I own are Colts.

I've shot lots of non-Colt 1911's, but none compare to Colt

Over the years, I've owned lots of 1911's. -- the only ones that have stayed with me are Colt.

I just picked this up and thought about selling it, but not now. Smith E-series 1911TA. Double Taps from the holster at 8 feet.

There are several manufacturers making nice 1911s these days, but my favorite is the original: Colt. If you want a 9mm, though, I agree with the poster above. JMB designed the best gun in that cartridge, and it wasn't a 1911. It's the BHP/P-35.
