What are the particulars of a Midnight Blue on a stainless revo? When was that finish offered? Cost? Quality? How does it hold up? Rarity/extra value? Thanks in advance.

They put a black finish on the SS 686 in the 80's and I dont think it ever took off, it scratched very easily and not very durable. I could never figure out why they would do that, I always figured why not buy a 586?

I defy ANYONE to be able to detect the weight difference between a carbon steel revolver and as corrosion resistant stainless steel one.

Not even laboratory quality digital analytical scales can tell the difference!

For all practical purposes, they weight the same.

They made some 686s in the late 80's that were called midnight black or something like that. Basically it was about as durable as ordinary blue, but when it wore around the edges you still had stainless underneath. Pretty good idea.

The better idea is the melonite finish that they have used on some stainless department order revolvers. Impervious to just about everything and even if it does wear, you still have stainless underneath. That was a good idea that they "missed" for whatever reason.
