I have a new M&P 22 that I haven't shot yet. The problem is that I can't tear it down to clean off all the factory lube/preservative off of it. Seems pretty easy. Flip the takedown lever 90 degrees, pull about halfway out, remove slide. For the life of me, I cannot get the lever to slide out. Is this a common problem with new M&P models or specific to the M&P 22? Any secrets I should know? I'd hate to scratch it up with a screwdriver trying to pry it out.

If this is like other M&P(and I believe it is) lock the slide back, pull the take down lever 90 degrees, use the tool to release the lever inside, and then pull back on slide, release slide lock and it comes off the front. Or if you have no magazine disconnect, you can forget the slide and then with the lever down, release slide and pull trigger. All of this is done with the magazine out. Hope this helps.

FS 22 is made in Germany by Browning. It's not a S&W design, just the shell made to look like it's M&P line. M&P 22 compact is a S&W design.

I disassemble mine only once - by watching youtube video. you need to pull slide back ALL THE WAY and lift the back part slightly up and then push it forward until you clear the barrel.

I may not have been clear with my original post. Once rotating the takedown lever downward 90 degrees, I cannot get the lever to pull out from the frame.
I'm trying to accomplish what this guy does in this video around 1:08.

Thanks for clearing that up. I didn't realize the FS and Compact were different designs. Is that the only one in the M&P line up that is different?

I'm not sure, sorry. But I probably was wrong on the designed - I more incline that it's Walter and not Browning. but definitely Germen one.

Had the same problem the first time I disassebled mine. Once I rotated the lever down, it didn't just pop out like I expected. I grabbed the bottom of the lever, and had to jiggle and pull out at the same time. After a while it finally popped out to where it needed to be to take down. Since that time, it comes out easier now. You also have to be careful, because its possible to pull it all the way out of the frame.

It will come out much easier after first time. I believe I used a compact knife with thin blade (scalpel is an option) and just pried it out, but do it closer to a pin itself, not to break the lever (I might be wrong but I think it's plastic part). Hope it helps.

btw, I watched the same video you linked - the guy was wrong that barrel is fixed and cannot be taken down. unscrew the front of the barrel and it comes loose from the base.

I jiggle mine a bit as I pull on it but it comes out pretty much just like the video shows.

Thanks for the replies. I went to a gun show this morning and saw another M&P 22 that was brand new and the lever pulled away with no problem. The dealer told me he has experienced the issue I was having on some pistols as well. At least I know I am doing it right. Just need to give it a little more umph I suppose.

Yes, it made by Walther not browning. The lever is hard to pull out sometimes, mine is still difficult even after doing it a few times.

The first several times I disassembled my M&P 22, I pulled on the take down lever until I thought it was going to snap off and it didn't budge. I ended up using a stubby flat head screwdriver for leverage by (carefully) sliding it under the take down (after turning it downward of course) and lifting up (not prying) with the screwdriver. I never scratched the gun doing this.

It gets easier every time you take it apart. I've got almost 10,000 rounds through mine now, and it pops right out with very little effort. I can't remember when I stopped using the screwdriver, but I'm pretty sure it was in the thousands of rounds and not hundreds. These days I can field strip this gun in about 10 seconds, which makes cleaning a breeze. But my Ruger Mark III is another story.. ;)
