It is time to update this 2012 post.

What is generally {not Reg Mag or one offs} the most rare* and/or sought after revolver wanted by our members. Meaning you, yes the fellow reading this. :p If you have never posted now is the time to start. Think for a second and then 'fess up. What are you looking for? :)

Maybe we should eliminate the blue 27-2 in 3.5 or 4.0 inch. If you don't have one, then you want one. And if you have one you want another, eh! Am I right about this? Just ask Jim.

:D:D:D

*Rare meaning difficult to find for sale or at collector grade condition. Not meaning rare because so few were produced.

And thanks to those that are posting pictures. We love pictures.:D

Not rare, but definitely scarce. I have only seen one. I would like the Model 68 with unaltered CHP stamp. Otherwise known as the Governor Moonbeam Highway Patrol Special.

Probably the 627 unfluted (no lock) UDR, snub - it's impossible to find one.

There's a lot of space between most rare and most sought after. Among the most rare, and several collectors here have some amazingly rare guns, you won't find them to be also most sought after, just because of the rarified price. For instance, the K22/40 or second model is pretty rare, but you won't catch me actually seeking one.

I'll fore go the obvious pre27 3.5"er.....

I'd like to find a LNIB or NIB 4" Pre 28...... I'd even settle for a 6"er in the same condition......anyone have one?

One of these?

Bless me Father for I have sinned. I stole two photos from another forum member. Amen

I would say any s&w revolver, colt revolver and ruger revolver in used condition locally I haven't seen used revolvers for well over three to four decades. Nothing was seen used locally. I would visit the lgs weekly sometimes 3 to 4 times a week. To me everyone who purchased them in the height of the revolver craze in the 70's to the early 90's were hanging on to them. You couldn't find a one.
I believe either the plastics craze or the owners passed away is why we're seeing so many on the internet for sale today.
They were all rare at onetime.

Don't forget when there for sale now they will go to a younger collector and seeing used one's will dry up again. History does repeat itself.

What are the rarest S&W revolver?
The ones I DON'T want.

On a serious note, I have a hankering for an old 44 Spl. but I don't really know why. Maybe just because I've never had one.

The m28 no dash are around $695 in 99% condition with 6" barrel and the m27-2 6" barrel are $795. These seem to be average prices.

I'll take a dozen 6" m28 4 screws at 99% for $695! The market in the 28 is climbing. It's hard to find a 4" or 6" -2 for $650 or less much less a 4 or 5 screw.

Believe me I know what the market is going to want for a LNIB or NIB 5 screw. I want to find one first.... Finding the funds will be the easier of these tasks......

If you are talking about production guns (not special order or special contract pieces) probably the rarest is the .32 DA 1st Model, 30 made in 1880. Other rare low production guns would be the New Model #3 in 38-40, 74 made 1900-1907, the Double Action top break in 38-40, 276 made c. 1900-1910, the .320 Revolving Rifle with 977 made.

id like a model of 1989,oh,which one? both! one in 45 and one in 357 not super rare but they are slippery, had one in my hands and it got away.
told my friend "i want it ", and he didn't realize i'd meant ,"i'll take it" as in sold. he sold to another guy that same day.:(
or a 5" 629 yeah, one of them too ,not rare but pricey.
i already have most of the ones i want.. pffft hahaha yeah right.
selling a bunch right now but theyre coming back

I would agree with Dan. I will take a dozen as well

The 2 rarest smiths I can't find for sale that I need are

The Non Reg Mag 3.5
Post war transitional 357 Mag 3.5.

i just sold a 28-2 in pretty nice shape but not perfect for 680 ,took about an hour to sell.
paid 400 a couple years back.
id say prices are rising.

I have been looking for a 4 screw Pre-27 for quite some time with NO luck at all. I have heard they are out there but you can't prove it by me. They must be pretty scarce. Also would love to have a Md 25-1. Never seen one of those either.

I believe the elusive K32 also deserves a mention. Hard to come by and Hi Dollah if you do find one for sale.

I would love, 4" .44spl M&P, .32 HE snubby, early Terrier, Model 48, 6.5" .44 Mag. made before 1968, M10 5" Nickel, almost any pre-war N-frame. Can I stop now?
