I was doing something foolish and just snapped a V spring in an H&R I am working on :mad::mad:. The spring I need is #5 on this schematic. It is pretty much the exact same width of a bobby pin (guess how I know ;) - it didn't work).

I'm thinking I will need to make one. What are these springs made of and where can I find the material?

Thanks

They're made from annealed spring steel wire that's formed and then heat treated.

I suggest measuring the wire diameter, angle and leg length and contacting some spring manufacturers. You may be able to find an existing part that can be cut to length. If you're lucky, they'll send you a sample or two.

If you don't have any luck with a spring manufacturer, Brownells sells spring kits as well as wire and flat metal to make any kind of spring you want. One of their Gunsmith Kinks books gives exact instructions on how to make springs. I believe that instructions can be found on Youtube also.

A friend broke the v mainspring on a Charles Daly single barrel trap gun, I gave him a piece of automobile leaf spring and he scribed out the broken one on it and bandsawed it out on a metal cutting band saw it was still working when he sold the gun. Jeff

V springs

I've had a fair amount of luck cutting a blued steel paper clasp,of the appropriate size, with a dremel tool cut off wheel.
It works for me! Dennis Vertrees #1388

Are you talking about one of these types of clasps? Paper Clasp If so, this might actually work but how would you shape/bend it?

Thanks for the help everyone... I actually got the bobby pin to to work by heat treating it with motor oil. When doing research, bobby pins are actually made from High Carbon Spring Steel.
