What are your preferences on 22 ammo?

Federal bulk pack. I get a few duds now and then but my 41 likes it just fine.

I've had good luck with Federal Champion 40gr solids.

Don't buy the Remington Thunderbolt stuff. It's terrible. One shot sounds like a low velocity 22, the next, a cb, and the next, an air rifle. A couple of times, I actually had to clear the weapon and make sure the bullet even made it out of the barrel. The recoil and noise was that low at times. I had one fail to ignite also.

I prefer Winchester Power Point but am going to try Federal American Eagle for a less expensive alternative for plinking and save the PP for hunting. Oh, no duds with PP in I'm not sure of how many cases....not cartons....cases...as in 5000!

Model 41 shoots CCI Blazers much more accurately than I am. Ruger Mk II only likes WW Wild Cats, and S&W Walther is amazing wih Federal Auto Match bulk. Each 22 has its own special needs.

CCI Mini-mags have always done me good. I recently picked up some Federal AE in the 38 gr that I've heard good reports on. Sage rats beware, I coming lookin' in a couple months.

You need to shoot several brands through your gun to check for accuracy and reliability and stick to that particular brand. I have 8 .22's and they all like there own brand of .22 ammo

I have been trying several brands of 22 ammo since I asked this question about 22's, and I have to say CCI does seem to be a premium type bullet, yet it is expensive, the american eagle(federal) In my opinion seems to be federals better quality 22, although the bulk pack federal I have had very few problems. Last weekend my son and I broke out a brick of winchester wildcats I've had tucked away for probably 15+ years and he had nothing but off and on problems with it in his 10-22, and that was within about a 200 round span, we are looking forward to burning it up. As far as accuratcy it seems what every my 16 yr old shoots he is dead on, must be those young eyes!!!My Steoger luger really likes the CCI best, and my Smith 17 is dead to nuts with the american eagle. The fedral 22's seem to be popular in my area, due to thats what everybody has on sale, Sure have enjoyed everyones input, Thanks Pigman

Whatever's available cheap!

I prefer Federal, then Remington, but haven't bought any in a long while, so I don't know if recent batches have been unreliable.

I can shoot Winchester ammo, but prefer not to, as I have found it to be absolutely filthy, and cruds up my guns like nobody's business.

Winchester Power Point all the way! It may be a little more expensive but it shure does a number on the gophers. Also my Walther P-22 does not like the underpowered cheaper stuff like American Eagle.

Stoneman, I wouldn,t mind trying some of the winchester power point, I was wondering what makes you think the american eagle is underpowered? I'll be darned if I can tell the diff between some ammo other that the way is functions in the gun. If there are higher powered 22's out there I sure would like to try them. Pigman

I've been using the federal bulk hollow points
for plinking.
CCI mini mags if I want a better quality.
Also have been using some of the Federal 40
grain ball that comes 50 a box.
The 10/22 that I'm using now isn't too picky.
I haven't used stingers in it though.
In theory I can, being it's a sporter barrel,
and should be able to handle them ok.
But I haven't tried them yet.
I used to use them quite a bit back when I was
using a model 60.
The mini mags seem to work well in the 10/22,
and are probably about my favorite for that
rifle. The bulk is pretty reliable in it, but
I'll get a slow ejector every once in a while.
I notice it more if the rifle is kind of dirty.
Clean, I don't have much trouble with any of
them. IE: the last 550 pack, I shot 300-350
rounds before I started seeing a few eject
problems. By then, it's getting a bit dirty,
and think it makes it more prone to the problem.
I've never had a single malfunction using the
mini mags yet.
I've never had a no fire with the federal bulk.
Just some may be a tad weak every once in a
while, and I think that helps cause the eject
problem. The shell will be slow getting out,
and the fresh round rams it up against the
back of the chamber. Usually crimps the empty
shell a bit.

Have a few bricks of Federal 550 bulk, and a half-case of Eley match that I found on sale. I have yet to shoot the Eley because it's listed as mildly corrosive and I'm not always the best about cleaning after a range trip.

Hi....I shoot standard velocity in revolvers, and high velocity in rifles. Prefer Winchester.
Sometimes trying to eject six fired HV cases from a revolver is difficult due to case expansion. In rifles, ejection is one-at-a-time, so no difficulty with HV rounds. BT

I shoot Aguila,CCI and Winchester in my Revolver -

SSS SNIPER SUB. 60GR SP - Muzzle Velocity:950 fps. - 120 ft. lbs.
CCI - Velocitor 40gr. GDHP - Muzzle Velocity:1435 fps. - 183 ft. lbs.
Winchester -
Bulk 333 box 36gr. Plated Copper HP - Muzzle Velocity:1280 fps. - 131 ft. lbs.

I shoot the following in my Rifle -

Aguila -
Interceptor 40gr SP - Muzzle Velocity:1470 fps - 192 ft. lbs.
High Velocity 38gr. Plated lead HP - Muzzle Velocity:1280 fps - 131 ft. lbs.

CCI -
Velocitor 40gr. GDHP - Muzzle Velocity:1435 fps. - 183 ft. lbs.

Winchester -
Bulk 333 box 36gr. Plated Copper HP - Muzzle Velocity:1280 fps. - 131
ft. lbs.

My "gold standard" is the CCI Mini Mag.

Substitute standard is the Winchester Wildcat.

For serious target use in a boltgun, Wolf Match.

Substitute standard target use: Fiocchi Subsonic.

Like it has been said before: a lot of it depends on the gun that you are shooting it.

I have a Walther PPK/s that is chambered in 22LR. I never made it through a magazine without some sort of a jam. Then while at Bass Pro shops one day, I bought 4 boxes of CCI Mini-Mags. I started shooting with no failures until I begain wondering at what point it would fail. Four hundred rounds later - no failures.

I do not use them in my good guns (S&W 41, Pardini, Benelli,...), and I cetainly wouldn't shoot Stingers in them.

In general, I, like a lot of others, have found the standard velocity ammo to be more accurate. This is especially true with some of the top-shelf stuff. However, there have been exceptions.

I bought a Remington 597 from Academy for less that $100 when it was on sale. Being half asleep when I left for the range, I forgot to grab a selction of 22 ammo. No problem, I had a couple of boxes of Wolf Match in the bag. I wanted to shoot the gun, so I tried it with the Wolf. It was terrible. I handed it to the Range Officer (I knew him well), along with some of my comments, which I can't repeat here.

He took it apart, floated the barrel with a shim, and finally brought it down to me (I was shooting something else on the pistol range). With a big grin he handed me the rifle and the ammo, along with a handfull of "golden bullets". He remarked: "Cheap guns like cheap ammo, it just can't digest that high dollar stuff".

Incidentally, the problem I had with the 597 was grouping. There weren't any failures to load or jams.

My 34-1 snub has had ejection problems with certain ammo due to expansion and works best so far with Federal bricks and the Taurus 94 4" eats anything but I am still experimenting. Remington bulk is the worst for duds.

Wolf Match (Made in Germany) has been remarkably accurate for me, but there are only three semi-auto rifles in my stable that will cycle it -- an old Remington 552 Speedmaster, a Mossberg 151K, and a High Standard A102 Carbine.

With the proper recoil springs, Wolf Match will cycle in my S&W Model 41s.

+1.

When I still had that stuff, I was averaging about 3 duds per 100. They were dead duds, too. After waiting for several minutes I'd wipe them down and try them again -- definitely dead.
