Growing up a fan of John Wayne, I always saw the good guys wearing Brown or Tan, with the bad guys typically wearing black or cordovan holsters. Always wanting to be the good guy with a gun, I have always worn tan or brown holsters. Probably a dumb reason, but I've always worn brown or tans for that reason.

I have a few black holsters, but my preference is brown.

Definitely brown or tan because as it ages with hard use, being exposed to weather and the sun, it gains a look of its own that just says "classic." Black, on the other hand, as it goes through periods of hard use and abuse, it just starts looking "ratty." Of course, that's just my opinion.:)

Traditionally I've always bought tan or light brown for CCW, but a few years ago bought a black tooled leather pancake from El Paso Saddlery to match one of their tapered, tooled belts that I used with my suits when I was working.

This Mitch Rosen is more typical for me:

More recently I've ordered a Kramer which, due to the nature of the horsehide they use is available only in black or mahogany. (I think since horsehide is not as porous as cowhide it does not dye readily.) Thinking about how none of my belts were a good color match for the Kramer, it started to bug me. I called 'em back the next day to order a mahogany belt as well.

I've got some dark brown and black in my meager accumulation as well, but have not worn them.

My preference is brown! I do own one black holster for my S&W 19-4 2.5-inch revolver. The holster is made by Bacon. The police in the 80's and 90's carried these holsters back where I grew up in N.Y.

Wow, some of your holsters are absolute works of art. I think I will have to give El Paso saddlery a try for a BBQ holster, that is just stunning.

I vastly prefer a holster to be lined, tan/medium brown color, and preferably with basketweave pattern. Black leather just doesn’t look right to me in gun leather, though I have no objection to it in dress shoes, belts, etc.

Most of my holsters are black, that color is just a better fit with how I dress. The exception is the Bianchi 5BH holsters I use with my SP-101 and K frame snubs. Those holsters only come in tan.

What difference does it make what I like? What is important is what do you like!

I have mixture of all. Not to mention Kydex.

When I first started carrying concealed, my favorite color was tan. While I still like the color, I quickly realized that black is a much more practical color for CCW because if it happens to peek out from under a shirt, the black will blend in so much better than a light tan colored holster, especially when wearing dark blue jeans. Black is just a more neutral and more concealable color IMHO.

Because of that I either bought new holsters or had them dyed black. Now I will only buy black holsters, belts and ammo carriers. While I do have a few tan holsters left, I rarely use them.

There are a few exceptions..... My two holster Cowboy Rigs are all tan but I am not trying to conceal them at all. They were worn at SASS matches and at competitions. I still wear them on private property when informal "cowboy shootin' is done and where I am not in the public eye so the color doesn't matter.

All my leather is black except for my Del Fatti ISP DD. Matt made it for me before it became a website item and we only discussed design (horsehide, offset clip) but not color. Since it’s IWB it doesn’t bother me at all. My similarly designed Lobo is in my preferred color.
