I'm new to shooting and gun ownership, so please bear with me. First gun was a model 60 3" / second was 617 6" 10 shot / third was 686PP 6" / fourth was 629PP 6". What's the best choice to start adding semi-autos?

Go to section #2 and start reading, you may want to go hunting and collect a piece of history

Welcome to the forum.

It would somewhat depend on what you want the gun to do for you and what caliber you want.
1911's are at the top of my list.

Get yourself a .45ACP semi-auto. I agree with Joni Lynn, 1911s are a favorite of mine as well.

Pretty much every red blooded American ought to have at least one 1911!

(.45 ACP of course)

Everything else is gravy!

you have a fine aray of smiths already....why get caught up in always having to buy more....enjoy the ones your have ...and dont get caught up in the always chaseing another crap.....warning given

1911s and their clones arent my favorite autoloader, but I dont think any gun collection is complete without one. If you dont have any expectations or if you are determined to get a certain semi, I would make a 1911 my first choice. You have many options with a 1911 also, barrel length, material and an array of extras such as ambi safety, hammer style, accessory rail, trigger, grips, sight type.

You are doing well on your choices so far, especially getting the L and N frames. Everyone needs a .22LR, and a 3" J frame as well. I would recommend the Springfield XD line of semi-autos when you get ready.
