A friend of mine has this just above here waitband on the center of her back. She said she just started feeling the pain from it a couple of hours ago. Any ideas what it could be?

Thanks,
Bill

Poison ivy/oak is my first guess. If not that, possibly a bugbite of some kind. If it spreads further or gets worse while remaining unidentified, I'd suggest seeing an urgent care or at the very least a phone call to her primary doc.

Same thing my wife asked

I don't think poison ivy/oak grows around here, not much of anything but cacti and other desert plans live and she's not the outdoors type.

It looks like a picture to me.

It could be any number of things, including the begining of shingles. It is a slight possiblity it could be a HSV outbreak also, it isn't always confined to the face or nether regions.

The only way to be 50% sure is to go to the doc and have it checked out. Even then it may still be a guess, derm problems are notorious for being misdiagnosed.

Cool. I was waiting for a good "Does this look infected to you?" thread.

Anyway, unless someone was doing, er, something... on the ground, that'd be an unusual spot for poison ivy/oak.

Spray some Solarcaine - Walmart will have it - on it for the pain and keep an eye on it I suppose.

Of course I dropped out of law school, not medical, so...

If it is painful, shingles is a good possibility. By the flush look of the rest of the skin, it doesn't appear to be localized.

Do you have a Doc in a Box nearby? Neat place to go on a sat night.

My bet is early shingles. Get yonder to the specialist at once for best results.

We can't diagnose such a small area in a photo like that. Have her to pose nude so we can throughly evaluate the whole area.

The fact your friend has complained of "pain" rather than itching leads me to concur with those who think shingles. Come from a remenant of the chicken pox virus if I am thinking correctly. Shingles is painful and pretty ugly looking when it gets bad. Have a friend who broke out all over his face, the swelling was temporarily disfiguing.

Just the thought of it being shingles is enough to have your friend seek medical attention, sooner rather than later.

The sooner anti-virals are started the better chance of them working is. If you wait too long, the meds won't help much and the course of the disease will be much, much longer and more painful.

I think it's shingles too (I've had them). She should see a doctor, they gave me antibiotics and serious pain pill and it still wasn't fun. My sympathies.

I am going to agree with others that its shingles. Shingles falls into the Chicken pox/herpes virus family. Here is something I copied from WebM.D.:

"Shingles symptoms happen in stages. At first you may have a headache or be sensitive to light. You may also feel like you have the flu but not have a fever.

Later, you may feel itching, tingling, or pain in a certain area. That's where a band, strip, or small area of rash may occur a few days later. The rash turns into clusters of blisters. The blisters fill with fluid and then crust over. It takes 2 to 4 weeks for the blisters to heal, and they may leave scars. Some people only get a mild rash, and some do not get a rash at all."

Its not funny to anybody who gets it and people here shouldn't have been joking about it.

MY wife has rhumetoid arthritis. One of the side effects is a rash that looks just like that complete with the little blisters.

Yes, she complains that it "hurts" more than it itches.
