What did I inherit? see pics

I agree with everyone else who has said that this a full on Custom based on the 1903 Springfield action. However, one thing that hasn't been mentioned is the quality of the wood in the stock, which is IMO flat out gorgeous. Someone took the time to select an exceptionally well figured piece of, I believe Maple, and then took the time to build it into a custom stock. Back when it was made that was likely a 200-300 dollar stock and in the early 60's that was a lot of money.

Back in the 50's and 60's there were many cottage industry Gunsmiths who made a living from sporterizing $20.00 Springfields and Mausers. After all there were millions of them and new guns were hard to get and expensive. I'm not proud now but around 1970 I paid $25.00 for a Remington 03A3, in cosmoline and made a sporter out of it.

What you have is something entirely different, one by a master barrel maker. It is one that made the transition to a gun of value. Check it and shoot it. I'd use a new '06 for hunting.

To the fellas sayin it won't hunt, why not?

According to your logic if a rifle is extreamly accurate you shouldn't hunt with it?

Funny, my brother has taken several deer with his Les Bear Custom AR which is a heavy barrel taget rifle.
