New Model #3.
It is cut for a shoulder stock.
It wears a non-factory reblue.

As Lee said, plus it has an altered front sight. Originals were a half-moon sight. We can help dating the revolver if you supply the serial number?

Have you tried a 44 Russian cartridge for fit? It was not uncommon to find these in 44-40 as well. 44 Russian will loosely fit in a 44-40 chamber, but a 44-40 will not chamber in a 44 Russian. Cylinder looks like a 44 Russian, but hard to tell for sure. Short cylinders for Russian caliber are 1 7/16", while 44-40 cylinders are 1 9/16".

Lastly, I am curious if the right stock has a number stamped or hand written on the underside?

Note that there are also 1 9/16" Russians.

Slight OT; I had a .38-44 Target cut for shoulder stock.
Has anybody done a study of what proportion of No 3 NM have this option?

Probably in the late 1870s to early 1880s. The ship dates for this model was all over the place and the sold guns did not ship in serial number order. You can get a specific date by requesting a factory letter.

Are you sure the serial number is 6949 ? The shoulder stock cut in the butt may have cut away part of the serial number. What's the serial number on the other parts of the gun, including inside the grip panels ? Ed.
