Hoping this is the right place to post this. I have a 4" model 14-2 nickel plated square butt with black (?) hammer and trigger. Ramp nickel front sight, heavy barrel. I was thinking it is a Dayton gun but the serial number ( K660974) is not in range according to the 4th addition book. Any help is appreciated and a ballpark figure of worth.

Is it stamped Model 14?

It has the look of a Combat Masterpiece (Model 15) to me.

Looks to me to be a K-38 Masterpiece that has had the barrel shortened to 4" because of the positioning of what is left of Smith & Wesson on the barrel. Most of the Smith has been obliterated so it is an after-market Nickel re-finish. The hammer and trigger should be color case-hardened, not black. Another hint of an after-market re-finish. Definitely is not a Dayton. It is a heavy barrel though, so definitely not a Combat Masterpiece either.

I believe there were a few guns made to the Dayton pattern after the Dayton contract guns that fell outside of the Dayton contract serial number range, but if OPs gun were one of those the barrel marking would be farther back with the Smith at least partially over the barrel lug.

Alk8944, Smith & Wesson is clearly stamped about center of the barrel lug. I see no sign of a cut barrel as the crown and front sight is perfect. It also has the N stamped on the grip frame for factory nickel.

Definitely an odd duck. The hammer and trigger are case colored as they should be. The N denoting nickel finish in the right places. Sounds like it is time to letter it. 4” HB 14 series in nickel has to be rather uncommon.

Thanks everyone. Just left the gun show, found a gentleman that wanted it way more than me. He seemed to think it was a Dayton gun shipped in a later batch, made in 1966.

Not sure how much it was, but you were correct. It is probably a Dayton gun. Mine is only 22 numbers off of yours.
