I had been keeping mine in plastic tubs with lids that just kind of snap on. My five dogs have long since figured out how to get into those, so I found something that had a kind of latch on either end, but it was easily defeated. I am looking for a plastic tub (doesn't have to be plastic, I guess, but I have to be able to afford it) that will hold 40-60 lb. of dog food and that has some kind of positive over-center latch, or other closing device that they won't get into so easily. The layout of my rather small house means that I can't put it in a closet or something, because there are no closets.

These dogs are pretty smart (aussies, and a boxer/lab) but not so smart as my sadly departed Mexican beagle, Pepe, for whom I had to bungee the refrigerator shut, or he would just open it and help himself to whatever he fancied.

I keep the dog food in seal tight plastic containers stored in the garage and the dog stays either inside the house or in the yard.

Anyway, my dog is not smart enough to open anything.

I keep mine in a metal trash can with a bungee cord across the top.

You might try a full service feed store. There is a brand of thick rubber feed tubs for horse feed that have snap on lids. They are chew proof also. Not cheap, but would work.

Inside the plastic cereal type containers with the snap on lids and they are inside the cupboard the three dogs don't mess with it.

this also keeps the racoons out, if I happen to leave the garage door open by mistake

How about a large ammo can? (this is a gun site, after all). There are several styles that should hold 30 lbs each, and they have positive over center locking latches.

My dog food is kept in a rubbermaid container I bought in 1984 to hold food for my first hunting dog, on dog #3 now, same container. It is a snap lid style sold as a trash can that used paper grocery bags as liners.

Ultimately, I put mine in the dog.
The kids got picky and quit eating it.

I have a square plastic container that has a round screw lid on it. It holds 30-40 pounds of dog food. Not sure if I got it at the pet store or wal-mart.

When I was on the farm we would just get a 50# bag from the feed store and lean it opened against the barn wall in with the cows. The dogs and cats ate when they were hungry. Every few days just roll the top down a little bit. They would get some milk morning and night. That's where they slept to.

I just got an airtight pet food container with the screw-on lid because Sadie's food is expensive (Wellness) and it was cheaper in the large bag, even though she only eats 3/4 cup a day. It holds a bag of food and cost $15. It's like this http://www.tscpets.com/12845-pid.html?productid=12845-pid&channelid=NEXTA but I didn't pay that much for it.

I see you can get the lids alone at Gamma Seal® Screw Top Bucket Lid BPA-Free, FDA Approved - White at Safety Central and make your own airtight container.

Otis isn't too bright. I keep the dog food in the bag it came in and have it in the corner by the washing machine. I guess if and when he ever fifures out it's there for the taking, I'll do something else.

Having a pack of labs who will eat all of everything if allowed, I have for years been using two plastic containers called "stack-n-store." About 20 bucks, will hold a 40 pound sack of food. If you need more than one, they're stack-able.

The top is angled a bit, and when the door is closed, it has a padlock style fitting on the door to lock it. Size of the lid makes it easy to refill.

I just put a small carabiner style clip through it, and it keeps the herd out.

I keep it in a plastic tub with lid up on the counter. If I ever left a bag on the floor, I'd be cleaning up exploded Dacshund off the walls and ceiling. Molly can make her meal last all day. But Angel would eat until she blew up.

I'm on Social Security, but otherwise make enough that I haven't had to eat dog food. :D

On the other hand, I may have eaten some in tacos and tamales in Mexican restaurants...I've heard the rumors.

I use a Gamma Seal Product like BarbC, called the VittlesVault stackable. I have a Beagle and the large bags of food we buy last for the couple months it takes her to eat them. Here is a link to Gamma Seals containers. G2 Product.images

Thanks for the tip. I found the lids at Fleet Farm and put them on 5 gal. buckets. Two buckets won't quite hold a 40 lb. bag of dog food, so I bought three. It makes for a lot more compact storage than a big plastic tub, too. I doubt these dogs can defeat them.

Go by your local fast food joint and see if you can't talk them out of a couple of those 5 gallon white food-grade buckets. I think they hold pickles and such. The lid snaps on really tight, and if you are lucky, it will come with a little screw on cap that you can pour the food right out of.
