When people ask me why I carry, I generally see it as an opening to get my viewpoint across to people who may not get it. I like to include real life examples the difference that carrying has made to carriers and their love ones. No one goes out thinking "today is the day I defend myself from thugs", but there are plenty of cases of people who get to the end of the day and because of events beyond their control think" thank god I carried today". And many cases of people who get to the end of the day and wish that they or a loved one had been carrying that day

I was reading a story tonight (first story below) on Cnn about a guy jogging and being killed by some kids who who were bored. It reminded me of another story of a Pa man who pulled a gun and shot one of the people who pushed him off his bike and were attacking him. (2nd story below)

Antis like to put their head in the sand and minimalize the impact that citizens who carry can make. Here we have a tale of two people outdoors enjoying life. One was 23 and basically just starting out his life, the other 65 and hitting the twilight of his life. Both were attacked by low lifes. One of them walked away from the attack. The other did not. The difference, the one who lived was carrying a gun and able to protect himself from the low lifes.

Just another example to add to the discussion the next time someone does not see the point of carrying or wonders why you do.

What do you say when some asks. Ignore them? Become confrontational? Use one liners like "because the Constitution says I can! Engage in debate? Use it as an invitation to get your viewpoint out there? Etc.....

I am not sure of this boards rules about posting articles yet, so am just including a title and link to be on the safe side.

I almost always carry concealed so I have never actually been asked, but the answer I am prepared to give is
"The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun - and there are lots of bad guys out there. When seconds really count the police are just minutes away..."

The Quintessential reasons why Grandpa carries a gun.

I don't carry a gun to kill people; I carry a gun to keep from being killed.

I don't carry a gun to scare people; I carry a gun because sometimes this world can be a scary place.

I don't carry a gun because I'm paranoid; I carry a gun because there are real threats in the world.

I don't carry a gun because I'm evil; I carry a gun because I have lived long enough to see the evil in the world.

I don't carry a gun because I hate the government; I carry a gun because I understand the limitations of government.

I don't carry a gun because I'm angry; I carry a gun so that I don't have to spend the rest of my life hating myself for failing to be prepared.

I don't carry a gun because I want to shoot someone; I carry a gun because I want to die at a ripe old age in my bed, and not on a sidewalk somewhere tomorrow afternoon.

I don't carry a gun because I'm a cowboy; I carry a gun because, when I die and go to heaven, I want to be a cowboy.

I don't carry a gun to make me feel like a man; I carry a gun because men know how to take care of themselves and the ones they love.

I don't carry a gun because I feel inadequate; I carry a gun because unarmed and facing an armed thug, I am inadequate.

I don't carry a gun because I love it; I carry a gun because I love life and the people who make it meaningful to me.

Police protection is an oxymoron: Free citizens must protect themselves, because police do not protect you from crime, they just investigate the crime after it happens and then call someone in to clean up the mess.

I have never been asked why I carry. Few people know that I do. My carrying friends used to ask me why I didn't carry. Here in Texas it appears the legislature is about to approve permits for open carry. No one I know wants to openly carry. We think an open carrier would be perceived as the greatest threat to, thus the first target of the bad guy.

Mae West had the best question when inquiring about concealed.

Never been asked. It would probably depend on the person. If a lefty I probably would reply to be there for you when the robbers over there in the dark alley come out to mug you.

If a righty might compare ballistics.

I really don't want folks to know.
