what do you say when asked "why do you carry"

Hmm...........I must be doing it right because the only few that have ever asked me that question were, co-workers who've seen me take it off my belt and place it in my tool chest so it doesn't get messed up while I'm working on cars.

Even when I'm out and about and wearing only a thin t-shirt to cover it up, I'm sure somebody somewhere has noticed the handle when I bend over to pick something up or whatever but, nobody that I don't already know has asked me that question.

The thing is, I live in a VERY gun friendly state so I'm sure a decent percentage of other people I see from day to day, are also carrying.

I just don't tell anyone I carry and never get asked.

I haven't even told my wife.

Only one friend who got his license first and then suggested I apply for mine knows I have a carry license.

That's the way I like it.

IMO "concealed" means no one else knows.

Because i want to. Thats really my answer. Otherwise i wouldnt carry around something which prohibits me from drinking and going to certain places.

At age 68 I have seen this question extended to " why do you think you need guns?" I used to engage these folks with all the above answers. I finally understood that most of them actually were condemning folks who own guns with a low toned "you poor fool you are paranoid non thinking non lover of mankind" attitude. SOOOO today when asked I say what they really want to hear...So I can kill people. Just saying so I can shoot people won't complete their thought process, you have to say , so I can kill people . Also, it's entertaining to watch their reaction.

I'm seldom asked but if I am I compare it to carrying insurance on my house or car. If prompted further I explain that I was a working cop for 30 years and had some experiences that changed me forever. That usually ends the discussion.

I have never had anyone ask. My family knows why, and others do not see it - remember, it is CONCEALED, not just covered. If others know or suspect, they have never asked.

The people that know, appreciate that I do.

The ones that don't know, don't know.

Plus, it's none of their business either way.

Be careful it's a loaded question sometimes.
I prefer to say nothing. I walk softly on saran wrap thin ice. It's no one's business what I carry or if I carry. I keep a tight lip about it. Having the surprise in a bad situation as it unfolds gives me an edge. I hope and pray the day never comes but to protect my family.

My reply:
Why do you wear a seatbelt in your car?
Umm... You may want to get a better reply.
I know too many that would reply to the seatbelt question with:
"Because the Law says I HAVE to".
(the whole "Click-It or Ticket" campaign).
