What do you think of these Ropers?

What do you think of these "J" frame Ropers and what do you think they are worth?

I think they are very attractive, but I am not sure that they would feel comfortable in every hand. J-frame grip fit can be a very personal thing, with one person's delight being answered by another's disappointment.

The person who likes them might be willing to pay $250-350 for them. The market for J Ropers is probably smaller than for K or N grips, so there might not be as much demand to drive the price as high as it would go for those larger-frame stocks.

I'll be interested to see what others think about the possible value.

I'd like to see how they look on a gun.

I think that they are way high on the "cool list". I think that David is probably pretty close on the value - maybe a bit higher on the upper end.

Are you sure that they fit a J Frame? With the "cup" in the upper inside of the right grip panel, they look to have been fitted to a pre-war gun which did not have the flat side plate screw head. If so, they may be for an I frame gun... (David W - help me out here a bit if I'm wrong).

First set of J or I frame Ropers i've seen. Very nice find.
No idea on value.

Richard, they do look kind of "I-ish" to me. In addition to the pocket for the oval headed screw, note also the relief for a strain screw. That certainly points to either prewar I-frame or early postwar I-frame -- definitely earlier than the "improved" I frame that used coil springs and no longer had a strain screw.

Notice the serial number 65938 scratched on the back of both panels, not that I think that is a solid indicator, since both the .38 RP and Chiefs Special series would have been without strain screws by that point.

Oops, didn't see that the strain screw relief had already been mentioned.

I have to apologize. These grips are too big for an "I" or "J" frame. I tried them on a "J" frame and they are much too big. I was told that they came off of a "J" frame so that was my original assumption.

They measure 4" from top to bottom. I think we are looking for "K" frame sized, round butt grips.

Can I rule out Colt vs. S&W?

I appreciate any input.

Hmmm...will those fit a Model 65 or 13, or other postwar guns? Do they need an older gun?

I think I'll post them for sale later, maybe this evening. I have another picture of the butt that shows a small scratch. I didn't post it before because it wasn't necessary to id the grips. I don't have a round butt "K" frame and I doubt if I'll get one.
