What exactly is so great about the Model 58?

Can't say enough good things about my 58. Picked it up in the early 80s under the influence of Bill Jordan. (Dated advice even then!)

Action was tight but with SERIOUS holster wear. It had been Magnaported. I could afford it!

Back then .357 was king and .44s were overpriced. I have been loading 180 grain .41s at .45 acp velocity for close to 4 decades. It's been bead blasted and parked long since.

I have no complaints. Obviously it earned a spot because it's still here.

I can't think of anything about the Model 58 that is less than great, unless it's the sad fact that my accumulation has none to speak of...:(...Ben

Some times some of us have no sense at all! Take a perfectly good 58 and tweak it. Good thing we still live in a country where we can do foolish stuff if we want.

What's not to like? Everything you need and nothing you don't The nickel 58 was acquired this year. Fixed sight magnums are just cool, and the 41 caliber makes it even cooler.

Love the M58 and the .41 Magnum! I've got a M57 and a M657 to go along with my M58. The 58 was definitely the hardest to find. I've only seen two at gun shows over the last several years. I traded a nickel 6" M57 for mine about a year and a half ago.

I have to confess,,,,I own a Ruger Blackhawk in .41 Mag and I just bought a Model 57 classic....yep, I'm a believer...I reload so I don't see a problem with the 41. I just bought some Starline 41 Special brass to try those out, however, I really don't see the point...using 215 grain Keith SWC's and Trail Boss powder I get some neat rounds,,,still powerful, but comfortable to shoot...I usually load 6.5 grains of TB for 910 fps...I generally use Titegroup or 700X if I want to go hotter...Unique is also a great powder.

I think you're not considering that Lilly bought most of his loading components years ago before the prices skyrocketed. He can load ammo today at 1980 prices, because he bought his materials in 1980 (or whenever). Would that I could do that, my last primers cost me $.125 each, instead of per hundred.

Interesting 2-year-old thread resurrection. I've always liked .41 Magnum because it was basically an orphan from the beginning. It was born, but nobody wanted it. Now it's beginning to get respect, and has become popular again, at least within a small, dedicated group. As for the M58, it seems to be the orphan's orphan, an ugly duckling without the fancy adjustable sights, no extractor shroud and a thin trigger and hammer. That is what made it desirable to me, plus I'd bought a M57 not long before, and it needed an ugly brother beside it in the safe.
Not what he posted. Why not let him say so?
Steve

My S&W Model 58 shows it's wear with pride. It was my carry piece in the Alaska bush from 1972 to 1982. Others in my S&W collection are in their boxes, the 58 will forever remain in it's holster ready for use.

What's so great about the model 58 ?

I've owned one since 1983 .

Reload and cast bullets for 41 Magnum and 41 Special .

I love both the cartridge and the gun ... They Suit Me !

If you have to ask that question ... You've never owned one

Gary

Bought this one NIB back in 1966 with a box of shells for $81.00.
Carried it as a LEO Sidearm for 13 years. Drew and dry fired it 10 times every day before going on duty and it shows.

We got into some serious social encounters, but we're both still here.

Leather can be EASILY found for a 58; any fixed sight N frame holster will do.
I'd go so far as to say any N frame holster will work. When you say "fixed sight N frame", they're even more rare in the model lineup than M58's; the only ones I can think of are the older .38/44 (M20), the M58 and the M520.

reloading can make all the difference in the world for this gun.

215 lead swc over 7.5gr unique with a wlp primer. as good or better than a 44spl., like a a grown up version of a heavy bbl model 10

I've got max load W296 JHP for my 657, but I won't shoot em in this gun.
