Hello all,
I've got a set of grips that I'd like some information about. The only thing I know is that they fit a K frame square butt. I had them on a Victory model to check. I'm guessing that they're pre-war because of the large escutcheons (1/2" diameter with a raised edge). I found these at a show and would like to know when and likely what they're from, and given the condition, what they're worth. I'm thinking about taking the escutcheons and using them for another project. Is this heresy? Am I considering the incomprehensible? I don't want to trash important history, so please let me know what I have here.
TIA,
Hoot

You have pre war K frame checkered diamond stocks with medallion. They may be from one of a number of K frame models. Check the right grip panel for a stamped or pencil marked serial number. This might offer a clue concerning what they may have come off of.

These were used on M&P's, 1905 Hand Ejector Targets, early British Service Revolvers (not Victory models), among others. I'm gonna guess about c.1930-1940. The condition looks poor judging from the photo but despite that they could be restored. I don't believe they are particularly valuable, such as Coke Bottle, Registered Mag or Triple Lock grips but, they would be desireable for someone needing a pair for their revolver. Hope this helps.

You have a set of grips used on K frames like the 38 M&P and the 32/20 HE and the Target models of the same guns. They date from about 1909 or 1910 to the first World War. S&W may have used up a few after WW I. Then, they used the non-medallion style till about 1930, when they started using silver medallions.
That pair would probably bring $35-50 on ebay.

Thanks guys! It looks like I shouldn't trash these for the medallions.

What I have in mind, is I've got a 1917 that has been shortened to 3 1/2" and nickeled. Not at all original, but a sweet shooter, neat looking, and kinda interesting in it's own light. Makes me think of 1920's gangsters/pimp gun. The grips that came on it are homemade, and not well done. I'm trying to figure out what to put on it to make it look period (20's-30's trashy/flashy) correct. I was going to put the medallions in a set of stag stocks, but I think I'll keep them as is.

Any thoughts as to what would look "correct" for my scenario?

Thanks again for your help,

Cool! You guys are a fount of inspiration.

Mike, this is what it looks like now, and I don't particularly like the fake pearls, but they're better than what was on it.

Deacon, I never could get used to the T grip. Maybe I'll get one for show.

Muley, those are gorgeous! They wouldn't be for sale, would they? My email is on my profile.

I was thinking about getting a set from executioner, but those are already aged.

Thanks for all your suggestions. This isn't going to be anything but a fun gun, but I really like the mistreated lady.

I need to find a shoulder holster too. Any suggestions where to find some or examples of older models? I'm going to look at robbt's stuff now.

Given that the gun is an N-frame, which is a large frame gun, I think you
will be happier with magna-style grips. To my eye, the smaller grips
give the gun a very different appearance, almost out of balance, whereas
magnas tend to pull the gun together.

What you have right now is very acceptable, particularly with that modern
front sight. That sight base is much better-looking than the forged front
sight base, and also gives the barrel a much-more balanced appearance.

Later, Mike Priwer

Thanks guys, you've given me a lot to think about. I'll update with new photos when (if) I make up my mind and get it done.
'Preciate all the input.
