Hi Guys & Girls,

Have scored a 4" 28-2 Highway Patrolman to go with my 6" 28-2 ;) & of course it's got "goodyears" on it :( (will get pics when I get my new toy home, sometime this week I hope  )

Now I want ot change the grips as I love timber on my N frames but have heard stories that people have trouble with griping the big N frame 28's when they are fitted with Magnas  I would like to put a set on this one but it's a shooter so I want to enjoy shooting it.

What grips do you Guys use on your 4" 28's.

Thanks for your help.

I have never been able to shoot the N-pframe comfortably with either the S&W Magnas or Target stocks. I prefeer either the rubber Pachmayr Gripper for the old square butt models or the wood Hogue finger groove stocks for the newer round butt models.

Others may disagree with me but I find Herrett Jordan Troopers very shootable. You need to get them made to fit your hand though.
I bought two sets used over the years and lucked out on the first pair (shown below on my 25-5) that are a great fit to my hand and the gun points perfectly with them. My second set were a K-frame set that were actually larger than my earlier N-Frame ones but a trip back to Herretts with both grips allowed them to trim the k-frame grips to match the N-frames in size and now both work wonderfully.

I love Ahrends Grips. The top are his finger groove Tacticals and the bottom are the smooth front Tacticals. Both are in cocobolo. I am finding that most of my S&W's are slowly going to his stocks.

A pal of mine put those on his M-29. Sure made shooting .44 Mag. ammo easier!

The Ahrends I have on my M27-2, fit my hand. Much easier to control. I would vote for Ahrends, but just my opinion.

Aren't all 28s shootable?
Yet another vote for Ahrends. The S&W Targets are just too big in the butt ;)
I prefer the Fingergrove Tactical style and have changed all my K, L, and N revolvers over to them.

JD, I like goodyears for shooting magnum loads if they fit my hand. They are not much to look at but they function very well for their intended purpose. I would probably try to find some original type wood and would leave the rubbers on for shooting.

Try Spegel's "Extended boot grips". Thin; and the extended grip.....IIRC 3/8th of an inch below the grip frame...... give you room for the little finger..

I have a pair on my 4" 28-2 and they fit great in my medium hands!!!!

He makes sets from "black walnut" for about $50-60.

I like either well-worn N frame targets (there was one set in the classifieds for short money), or even better, N frame magnas with a Tyler T grip adapter.

Sterret's Shooting Stars fit my hand about like Hogue Rubber. I like 'em.

Thanks heaps Guys,

Well after reading all your replies & looking at the great pics I am looking at a set of Ahrends & a set of magnas :D can't make up my mind so I'll get both ;)

Here in Australia we don't get as much of a choice in grips as you guys so I've been doing the web sites & found both of these sets on ebay & the money isn't too bad.

thanks again & I'll keep you posted.

JD,

As you're in Oz, you might want to check out "Gripseller" for Ahrends. She's on both GB and EB.
That way you get to see the exact ones you're getting and she's really good at international shipping.

Here is what I have chosen, out of the 4 variations I have tried. If you don't like the feel of magna's, try them with a T-Grip, it makes a huge difference. The best feel is this set of cut down targets, slimmer and shorter than the originals, which I think are entirely too large...
