Went to the range today with my sw40ve and had something happened that freaked me out. I haven't been shooting weapons very long so I'm not sure if it was something that I did wrong or something with the weapon. I had shot maybe 3 or 4 rounds when I pulled the trigger and nothing. So I thought I might have had a bad round so I dropped the mag and tried to eject the round. I tried to pull the slide back and eject the round but it wouldnt pull back, almost like it was locked. I wasn't sure what to do, so keeping the weapon pointed down range I pulled the trigger and it fired. If you guys/gals could help me understand what happened or what I did wrong I would greatly appreciate it.

The Sigma is a recoil dependent DA pistol if the slide is not brought back it will not rest the striker. The Sigma is very basic if you fully pulled the trigger the sear moves rearward and down which would cock/draw back and then release the striker, there is no second strike capability at all on this gun. My guess is you didnt fully pull the trigger.

Id fully break down the gun for cleaning and inspection...clean the striker channel as well.

Although its a Glock it gives you an idea of how a Sigma works...but with the Sigma the striker is only reset not partially cocked. Link below

Problem with 40S&W

On the last cartridge that failed to fire I wonder if you didn't release the trigger far enough to reset?

Good Luck

I wouldnt worry to much. Seems that the guys above are right about what happen. By no means am i any kind of expert but i have taken several people shooting with me before that have had none to zero shooting experince and have done the same as you did. They would listen to me as far as slowly in a controlled manner squeez that trigger but they would not go all the the way through. They would stop look at the gun and turn around and look at me like they were lost. I would remind them to keep the gun pointed a a safe location and to sit it down on the bench.

I would pick up the gun clear it and check the round, stuck the round back in the pipe and fired it with out any problems, thats when i figured out they werent pressing enough on the trigger. So when my other friend had the same problem i told him your not pressing it all the way, he would re do it and guess what..Bang!

Remember compared to other pistols of its kind the sigma has a long heavy trigger!! ive had females that have shot it and they shake as they try to shoot it and maintain a good sight picture. I even get a little shaky with it after a 200 + shooting session. However i still LOVE my sigma!! Great gun!

Thanks for all the replys!!! I understand that I probably didn't pull the trigger back far enough, but I couldn't pull the slide back to clear the gun. I guess thats the part that worried me a bit.

It sounds as if you never reset the trigger on the failure to fire round.... except for the fact that you couldn't manually cycle the slide. That doesn't sound right. Doesn't really seem related though. Sometimes the slide "sticks" and needs a little more force to get it moving. Break it down and dry fire it a bunch.

Regards

Just a guess....

The following is purely conjecture: One possible reason the gun didn't fire the first time was that you has a slighty damaged or oversized round that didn't allow the slide to go fully into battery (i.e. fully forward) which prevented it from releasing the sear, and the round was wedged tightly enough in the chamber that it was difficult to pull the slide back. Guessing that in your efforts to move the slide you bumpted it into battery enabling it to fire.

Marlin interesting take, it was cheap ammo that I was shooting so very possible.....HalfStack I was shooting the ol'el cheapo ammo.... Tul ammo 180 gr

Not wanting to start a "ammo war" conversation here but i have shot Tulammo with out problems. Its not all i have shot but i have shot it and I havent had problems with it. Also cowboyfan i dont know about your sigma but when i got mine brand new i remeber the recoil spring being very tough for me to rack the slide. (5'9 tall and 165 pounds)

id say it has zero to do with ammo as he claimed to pull the trigger and nothing happened...tried to move the slide but it didnt.....pulled the trigger again and it fired.

I believe he just didnt fully pull the trigger the first time.....the round may have been bulged out a little causing the round to seat tight in the chamber.
