.....this Model 49 was the result. You folks ever shoot a lowball offer to someone knowing they won't take it, but yet, they DO? That's how I ended up with this. Guy wanted 600.00 for it with Goodyear grips and these factory magnas on ArmsList. I thought, what the hell, and offered him half that, more or less expecting a smart *** response. Instead, we agreed on $350.00, I met him last night, and it came home with me. What he DIDN'T tell me was that, in addition to the factory grips with the Pachmyers, it had the original box, all papers, plus two HKS speedloaders, fifty rounds of 110gr Winchester Silvertips, six Glaser Safety Slugs, and six rounds of CCI shotshells. I don't think I got robbed, especially in today's climate. Didn't really need it, but it sure feels good in the hand and makes a good companion to my early 642-1 as well. I put the wood grips back on, oiled it slightly, and added a t-grip. What do y'all think; personally, I love these old humbacks and think they have a lot of character.

Did you at least wear a mask when you bought it? Those are great little guns and my absolute favorite pocket gun. I would guess the market value on that is $500 +.

Nice find.

Nice, nice, nice. I've seen a spike in the price of J-frames over the past few months. Most that I've seen that were in good to great shape, without any goodies, you can expect to pay $450.00 - $600.00. I just bought a Model 649 from a fellow forum member at what I thought was a good price, and your deal makes me look like a piker.

Enjoy, this just makes up for those time when the gun gods weren't smiling on you.

Regards,

Dave

Heck, yeah, I make ridiculous offers on stuff all the time, and not just guns. I do it with furniture, cars, tires and I did it on two of our houses. I'm really good at haggling.:D I've even haggled on groceries at a store I shop at frequently. I knew the guy in the meat section and wanted some crab legs. Talked him down a couple bucks a pound.
I figger I can always go up on my offer, so why not start out as low as possible? My philosophy is, the worst they can do is say no. I've been married for over 24 years.....I've heard no A LOT.

Ya done good on that one.

Did you really use the word "figger"? Haha awesome!

You got a great deal. Sometimes when I've sold vehicles in the past I had listed them a little higher but was always open to best offers. I guess with guns it goes the same way. Great little shooter you got there.

It's the lost art of haggling. Some understand how to haggle and some don't. Some who understand it get mad at a low ball price. The ones who don't understand how the dealing works take the low ball offer. Not everyone watches the pickers on tv.

Great deal congrats enjoy it.

I taught my kids how to haggle and not to show their facial expressions too. Never look excited or rush into haggling with a quick response. Go slow.

To the op's question, yes I have done what you have done. If the seller can't say no then that is the seller's problem unless it is some elderly folk who is trying to sell their deceased spouse's gun. I say you did excellent. So when are you putting in the for sale section?:D

low ball

thanks jframe for the idea, after reading you post i jumped on another site, found a 2.5 in m66 in mint cond offered 525 and the guy took it,havent been able to find one anywhere for less than a grand. An offer on anything is just what its worth to you, unless you put a gun to his head the seller shouldnt be upset, worst thing he can do is say no,its called negotiating.

I passed on a fairly nice model 38 no dash with 5 digit serial # this weekend for $400, there was not much blue wear, very little actually, but there was a bit of freckling, or at least the beginnings of it, I was not sure how it would clean up, so I passed. You dont see 38's or 49's around here very often. There was another one at the same show I was at, they wanted $500 in worse condition.

Great find!

I always low ball because you never know. That's how I recently picked up a LH 24-3 in the box for $400. :)

If the bluing is around 98% to 99% with a little travelling then haggle for it the same chrome will remove the mild freckling.

Pap was a trader and his saying was when he was selling. I won't get get mad at you for offering if you don't get mad at me for not taking it. Or the other way around when he was buying. Larry

Oh, man, you've always got to give yourself wiggle room. Face-to-face dickering is an art and a great deal of fun. Except at garage sales where the seller thinks his possessions have gove up in value just because he or she owned them.

Wow, you guys are finding cool deals. To the guy who got the LH 24-3 for 400.00, I'll give a nice Model 49 and fifty bucks for it! :)

Good for you!

I sold a gun last week for $500. I was asking $550. I had at least six other offers between $450 & $475. $500 was THE number, and $500 is what I got.

I don't lose money on my deals...but that guy in your story probably did...

I picked a Model 49 2 years ago in a local pawn shop for $200. The owner wanted $350 but it had sat there for over two years so I low balled
him and got it for $200 plus $50 in transfer fees. My Dad has it now....
