What if I have to move?

So, currently, I live in Colorado where gun laws are about as "anything goes" as there is. I was laid off a month or so ago, and might have to move for a new job.

Obviously, my M&P15-22 with retactable stock, releasable magazine, 25 rd, etc is not legal everywhere.

How does it work? Would I have to make it compliant to the new state's rules? What would be the penalty?

If you come to Oklahoma, nobody cares.
In one of the socialist worker's paradise states, you would get off lighter raping the mayor's daughter on the courthouse steps than showing up with a banned gun.

I turned down a very lucrative offer for a post-retirement job in NJ when I discovered I would have to sell several guns and all my classic cars to move there. Less money here, more freedom.

My background is engineering/metallurgy. Most recently I was Quality Manager of a small parts manufacturing facility making parts for medical, aerospace, automotive, and consumer applications.

I've moved with guns. Ammo is worse, takes days to move it all and kills your back. But I digress. Gun laws vary in different states. Usually, if there is an AWB type law still in place, you won't be able to bring your weapon into a given state. Penalties vary, but it's usually a felony not to comply. California, Hawaii, New York, and New Jersey come to mind as places with such laws. Since unemployment is bad in California, I'd think that'd be a non issue, however one can sometimes skirt the law in Cali by building "compliant" ARs. These use off list lowers and usually a bullet point or other system of "fixing" the magazine in place.

Wow, that could be a tough field to find work in.

I am south a ways in Elbert County, but maybe some day we could meet at a range in the middle or something. The only range in town that I ever go to is Firing line in Aurora, but you probably know of others. I am lucky that I live out in donught center and can shoot in the pasture by my house so I don't belong to any ranges.

There are 5 States you would have issues with..NY, NJ, MD, CT, MASS..that's it.
It gets a little tiring about hearing of these so-called "commie bloc or non-free" States, like those of us who live in one of these States are less of an American than you are. How about toning down the BS, no place is Heaven no matter what you think.
