What if S&W had a make-your-own-revolver program?

I'm thinking retro.... I'd buy one of each of the guns S&W should have made in normal production.... maybe two...

N frames, P&R, no locks, no MIMs, checkered top strap and rib, half under-lug, smooth burl walnut target stocks, in both stainless and original bright blue, in 357, 41, 44, and 45LC/45ACP (convertible), ALL WITH A 5" BARREL......

S&W... If you're listening consider these 8 guns in both finishes to be my firm order...

a 3.5 inch 627 8 shot 357 Magnum checkered top trap, rear sight, rib and ramp. Also checker the drum on the rear of the rear sight. Bright polish stainless, full action job, slick double action, single action that breaks like glass with no perceptible movement due to over travel screw. Moon clip capable.

You had me right up to the part where you went with the bright polish stainless. I shall have mine in brushed finish

A .41 Special on a K-frame. 4 inch preferably. Not sure if the cylinder could be fattened or not.. 6 in the .41 spec would work for me! Being a "special" and not a mag would keep the pressures way down I would think.

- old style hammer (though I'm not stuck on this one)
- Optional grips (other than Magnas or those super-size horrors most revolvers feature today - some of us don't have gorilla hands)
- No internal lock (because)
- Finally, oddly, I want a lanyard ring on it. Not a cutout on the backstrap - a proper lanyard ring.

I imagine it to look roughly like the above. It would likely sell all of half a dozen examples, cost somewhere in the neighborhood of four figures, and possibly take S&W one step closer to bankruptcy, so...I'm not holding my breath.

...though if I can get the stars lined up right I might build a one-off model someday.

Also, I want a source for pre-war styled grips that doesn't break the bank. Again - short fingers.

I think I would have to go with a 696 with a larger/thicker forcing cone, a tritium front dot, and the solid rear sight like the Night Guard models. For me, quite possibly the perfect carry revolver.

Pretty close, but what I would want is a 596 (I like blued steel), square butt, and a 4 inch barrel. Oh, it would have to be engraved like my 696 with my badge on on the right side. Can I have ivory grips too?

Perfect carry revolver? Absolutely!

I think that a 4 or 5 inch barreled version of the NightGuard series would be nice. I love everything about my 315NG, but a longer barrel would make it "perfect-er"! I'll take 1 in .45, too....

My two dream guns from S&W.....

A stainless steel four inch L-Frame with a half lug ejector shroud, adjustable sights, round butt, and chambered in 10mm Auto. No damn lock of course.

I'd also love a 5 inch single action 4006TSW with a integrated light rail, tritium novak sights, and no mag disconnect. Would love for S&W to make higher capacity mags for it too. Bump them up to 13rd-15rd.

Wait? Are we talking Revolvers? I really don't know. But I am seriously curious about the 'dash', or 'no dash'. What does that mean?

I'm quite happy with my 442 (IL and all), and I know my wife likes her Model 60, so neither of us have any complaints about our choices in S&W. My guess is we'd argue if we had to choose handguns that we both liked, from the same manfacturer, if it was anyone else.

6" barreled full lug X-frame, no lock, chambered for 44 magnum, fitted with the easily swappable front sight, glass bead blasted finish, fitted with Nill grips (phil hemphill model).

Alternatively, some kind of wholly new frame thats an inbetween of a N and X frame, much like the L-frame is to the K & N frames. Once again for 44mag and full lug.

I didn't see it mentioned, so here's what I'd like to see for a build it your own; with options. Since the demise of the 547, I've wanted to see a good 9mm option for awhile, I was never crazy about the 940, but it would include options like that (J-frame).

If I could build my own optioned and ordered revolver, it would be a L-Frame, 9mm (7 round), two peice barrel (like the 619/620) heavy barrel, semi-lug, fixed sight, 4" barrel round butt, and in stainless. Finally, the old 547 cylinder system, which did not require moon clips. In the end, it would look something like this photo (my current 619)

Options could be K-frame (6 round), moon clip version cylinders, 2 1/2 to 3" barrels, adjustable sights, full lugs, etc., but what I listed first is what I would order.

At this point, I'd just be happy if they simply re-ran the 547 production line, or at least made the current model 64 with a 9mm moon clip option.

Performance Center "one off"

...This attached picture shows my prototype alloy cylinder 442. I had a very good friend in the Performance Center one day in the mid-1990s who knowing I liked weird stuff called me and said they had finished a run of 442 revolvers for the U.S. Secret Service who wanted an extra light gun to wear on the ankle for Clinton's morning jogs.

They had one of the un-fluted alloy cylinders left and he told me "go buy a 442 and send it to me, I'll put this cylinder in your gun and it will be identical to the guns we made for the Secret Service". ...member GHEN

4. remove barrel lug, replace it with old style ejector rod shroud

5. Proper bluing job, Colt and Walther Level of polish

6. Walnut Wood Grips with Palm Swell like the Pachmayr grips and the old Coke Bottle style grips

7. Solid 1 inch thick Wood case with two key locks lined with a very durable suade like materal that doesnt hold moisture and wont mar the gun

price: 1000 bucks for the gun, 100 - 200 extra for the display case and custom wood grips
