Can anyone recommend a simple padded compartment range bag to hold up to 4 or 5 handguns upright side to side.

Midway range bags are quite good and reasonably priced.
When you get to the point of 4 or 5 different guns, especially if they are different calibers, you are also toting 4 or 5 different types of ammo. Add in normal range stuff, such as a few tools, hearing and sight protection, and the weight can get uncomfortable especially if you have to carry it all for a long distance. For that reason, consider something with wheels.
Where am I going with this? There are range specific bags out there with wheels that are very nice, and also very expensive. Consider instead a carry on suitcase re-purposed for a range bag. Such suitcases can be found at very reasonable prices. I have one I used for several years that not only held all the above items, but also a spotting scope, bean bags, targets and staple gun as well. No, it didn't contain fancy compartments to hold each gun and ammo separately, but I used gun rugs/cases to protect the guns, and everything worked out fine. I packed the bean bags and ammo on the bottom (end with the rollers), guns and scope on top, and other stuff in the pockets on the side and front of the case.

Large one for most of the stuff and guns a small one for ammo and "overflow" As our range is out in the "swamp" you need to be self sufficient and "be prepared"

I built one out of plywood modeled after the Packmayr black ones that can be purchased commercially. It opens from the front and reveals a slide out shelf that holds 4 or 5 guns. There are standing strips of wood with wood spacers at their bottom in varying thicknesses and a rod with a wing nut that tightens it all together holding the gun barrels in place. I lined the wood "fingers" and the drawer bottom with felt to protect the barrels during transit.
Under this pull out shelf is enough storage for "ears" and several types of ammo as well as tacks, staples and a small staple gun. There is a timer attached to the inside of the raised front door for bullseye practice as well as a bracket to hold a spotting scope.
It is not light but gets the job done and usually you are only carrying it a short way. I have also seen them with a shoulder strap to help lighten the load.
Anyway it works for me and holds everything I need. You can buy one online for $150-$190 but as a carpenter, making one was a no brainer.

I've got three of the smaller "compact" Competition bags. They hold five full size guns quite nicely just in the center compartment. Here's three guns in separate Midway pistol bags plus two that ride in the divider compartments. Still have the zippered side and end compartments free. Now if the pistol bag mag holders are stuffed with double stack mags then things can get a bit tight
. If a guy was just tossing in guns in normal pistol pouches probably fit a couple more. At our outdoor club you pull up in your vehicle right to the different ranges so there's no need to have all my gear stuffed in one bag or container. Ammo cans for ammo... and one gear bag.

I carry mine in a hard, foam-lined pistol case, with two layers. Then I carry a bag with ammo, ear protection, tools, etc., plus target stand, base, sand bags, and God knows what else. It takes me 4 trips back to the truck to get all my stuff.
I generally don't need much, as it is just a short distance from the house to the picnic table I use for a shooting bench, (and occasionally we eat there too). I have small ranges set up at both of my cabins and one at home as well (I live out in the countryside, on 50 acres).
But I still use gun cases and rugs to prevent unnecessary dings on the guns while carrying them.

As a "cheap curmudgeon" myself, I tend to look to re-purpose things I already own. I've been using a gym bag augmented with spare foam I've had lying around. I can comfortably carry 4 pistols sandwiched between foam and all the normal/necessary accoutrement in it (including 4-5 mags per pistol, eyes, ears, small cleaning kit, etc.). The only thing I carry in a 2nd bag is ammo as that varies from gun to gun and by range trip.
Otoh, as a Xmas present for myself, I just purchased a purpose-made backpack off eBay for $50 that is visually nicer but doesn't actually add any functionality or cushioning. (Hey, I had the money lying around burning a hole in my virtual pocket and I deserve it!)

This must be beyond my pay grade.
I put the pistols in gunslips and throw them into a small duffel bag.
I also carry accessories such as stapler, staples, rags, cleaning rod, etc in the duffel.
I've tried some specialty bags, but none work as well as the old duffel.
I'd rather spend the money on ammo than a specialty bag.

I use a soft side tool box from Lowe's to carry my gear. Gun rugs keep the guns from banging around.

I have the large Midway bag. Ammo cans are for ammo.
Easily carries six pistols. Two in rugs. Electronic muffs, Dark Angel first aid kit, & tools. Everything. It'll be heavy, but the shoulder strap is great. I only carry six when traveling south for a few weeks. Easy to take into motel.
Locally I only carry two or three pistols. Much lighter.
I don't know what's in the bottom for support, but it holds its shape, unlike cheaper bags.

I would like to know if anyone has ever washed a range bag??
My Midways(s) have been in use for a long time and are a tad dirty/grimy. Don't know if I would wreck it??. Have to check if there is any cardboard or fiber board in the bottom??
Whatch ya think, wash or leave it alone??

An earlier post mentioned that if you have several handguns you are going to have multiple boxes of ammo, hearing/eye protection, tools, etc. and it gets heavy quick. That was my dilemma until I bought an early version of what is now called a Craftsman Tool Organizer/Tote Truck. It has two removable trays and carries a lot of stuff. I got mine before they added wheels, a genius idea. Holds everything I need and a lot of stuff I probably don't need, too. And you can sit down on it when you run out of ammo. KMart sells them for $54.
